Free Vehicle VIN Etching Offered in Montgomery
County; Vehicle Identification Numbers Etched Onto Vehicle
Windows as a Means of Theft Prevention
KING OF PRUSSIA, Pa., June 5 The Pa. Auto Theft Prevention
Authority will co-sponsor a free VIN etching event, held by the Pennsylvania
State Police Auto Theft Task Force (Eastern Region), on Saturday, June 9,
2001, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Open to the public, the event will be held at
the King of Prussia Mall, Route 202, King of Prussia, Pa.
VIN etching is a proven theft deterrent, where the Vehicle's
Identification Number (VIN) is etched on to all the vehicle windows. Would-be
thieves resist stealing a vehicle that is VIN etched because that vehicle is
more easily identified and, if stolen, all glass must be replaced in order to
remove traces of the VIN.
This is a free service provided by the Pa. Auto Theft Prevention
Authority. Local and state police officers and volunteers from local
insurance companies will etch the first 300 vehicles (weather permitting) on a
first-come, first-served basis. The Authority encourages vehicle owners to
spend some time at the mall on Saturday to take this step to help protect
their vehicles.
