Zimmerman Elected to Goodyear Board

    AKRON, Ohio, June 5 James M. Zimmerman, chairman and chief
executive officer of Federated Department Stores Inc., has been elected to the
board of directors of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.

    "We are pleased to welcome Mr. Zimmerman, a recognized leader in the
retail industry and someone who has been involved in helping reshape it for
more than 37 years, to Goodyear's board," said Samir G. Gibara, chairman and
chief executive officer.

    Zimmerman, 57, served as Federated's president and chief operating officer
from 1988 to 1997 before being elected to his present position.  He has been a
member of Federated's board of directors since 1988.  He has held positions
with various divisions of Federated since 1965, including Rich's Department
Store Division and Sanger Harris in Dallas, Texas.

    He serves on the board of directors of The Chubb Corporation and H.J.
Heinz Company.  Zimmerman earned a bachelor of arts degree in liberal arts
from Rice University.
