ZAP Forms Fuel Cell Partnership With DCH Technology Subsidiary

    SEBASTOPOL, Calif., June 5 ZAPWORLD.COM
today announced an agreement with Enable(TM) Fuel Cell Corporation, the wholly
owned subsidiary of DCH Technology, Inc. (Amex: DCH), to develop an
electric-assist bicycle powered by a hydrogen fuel cell.
According to ZAP and DCH/Enable(TM), the goal of the relationship will be
the introduction of the world's first commercially available fuel cell powered
electric bicycle. The joint development partnership is scheduled to introduce
its first units by 2002.
DCH/Enable said it would demonstrate a prototype of an entirely new fuel
cell for the bicycle application at the ZAP shareholder meeting, June 16 in
Sebastopol, California. The new fuel cell incorporates aspects of DCH's
higher-wattage fuel cells with the compact packaging of Enable's portable
family of fuel cells. This unique power pack has more than twice the power
density of previous portable Enable designs.
Hydrogen fuel cells produce electricity from hydrogen and oxygen with the
only by-product being emissions in the form of water vapor.
"After evaluating the market, we believe an electric bicycle is the most
practical near-term application of fuel cell technology," said ZAP CEO
Gary Starr. "ZAP has always tried to be a leader in bringing new 'Zero Air
Pollution' vehicles to market and we look forward to working with DCH/Enable
to make fuel cell bicycles a reality."
"ZAP provides us with a strong channel to a potentially huge market for
fuel cells -- viable, low-cost personal transportation," said DCH President
and CEO John Donohue. "We are also excited in that ZAP is the kind of
innovative company that looks for unique ways to engage the public with new
ideas and technologies, which is very much in step with our own vision."
In May, ZAP announced a joint venture with Voltage Vehicles to develop,
design, manufacture, and distribute a full line of new personal electric
vehicles as well as ZAP's current line of electric vehicles, including a new
neighborhood-class electric car that will be unveiled at ZAP's shareholder
meeting on June 16. Voltage Vehicles was recently acquired by Advanced
Wireless Systems of Scottsdale, Arizona.
