Delphi Focuses on High-Tech Growth Products and New Market Applications With its INTELLEK(R) Sensors at Sensors Expo 2001

    CHICAGO, June 4 Delphi Automotive Systems is
expanding into new markets beyond automotive and high-tech electronic
applications with its line of INTELLEK(R) sensors and actuators, many of which
are on display June 5-7, at Sensors Expo 2001, at the Donald E. Stephens
Convention Center, in Rosemont, Ill.

    Soon, more than a sticker in the corner of a windshield from a local oil
change shop will notify a driver when to change the car's oil.  It won't be
too long before a windshield will defrost without the push of a button.  And
the time will come when tiny machines, the size of a grain of salt will help
operate a vehicle's engine.  These may sound like the ideas of a Hollywood
screenwriter, but they are actually sensor and actuator technologies developed
by Delphi engineers.
    Delphi's INTELLEK, or "smart" sensors, blend the basic sensing function
with the ability to perform calculations.  Using new technologies, such as
widely discussed MicroElectroMechanical Systems (MEMS), Delphi is
miniaturizing sensing technology and combining it with microelectronics,
software, and algorithms to create very small, low-cost sensors that can
measure and process data.  That data can then be distributed over a data bus
to be accessed and used by multiple system controllers.  These types of
sensors have a broad range of uses in many industries such as medical,
telecommunications and agricultural equipment.
    Through the integration of sensing, electronics, and actuation, Delphi is
also creating "smart" actuators.  These single modular devices perform a
variety of functions while providing data to systems throughout the vehicle or
other non-automotive devices.
    Featured sensing technologies in Delphi Booth #523 include:
    *  Non-contacting position sensors -- a variety of sensors utilizing non-
contacting magnetic technology to improve reliability; particularly in harsh
environments.  (Examples include: rotary position sensors, steering position
sensors, linear position sensors.)
    *  Oil condition level sensor -- integrates sensing, electronics and
software into a system that alerts drivers when oil changes are needed by
taking into account the factors that contribute most to the rate of oil
degradation.
    *  Fuel vapor pressure sensor (FVPS) -- measures fuel vapor emissions
released into the atmosphere.  It is a government requirement to control fuel
system emissions.  (For instance, if the fuel cap is left off a vehicle, the
check engine light will come on because excessive fuel emissions are escaping
from the tank.)
    *  Temperature sensor -- measures variables such as temperature and
humidity, and provides input to the vehicle's computer control system.  These
inputs are used for automatic control of passenger comfort systems such as air
conditioning to improve occupant comfort and help the vehicle's fuel
efficiency.
    *  Humidity sensor -- a capacitive-type sensor that measures relative
humidity to help prevent the formation of window fog and frost.  This sensor
type can also be used to reduce emissions.
    *  Angular rate sensor -- calculates rotational vibration and can be used
in a variety of consumer and commercial-grade products that require stability
enhancement.
    *  MEMS -- high-quality sensor modules employing piezoresistive and
capacitive sensing.

    By consolidating components, software and wiring into a single, multi-
functional device, INTELLEK smart sensors and actuators provide a variety of
