WORLD CHALLENGE DEBUTS AND CELEBRITIES RETURN TO
20TH ANNIVERSARY TENNECO AUTOMOTIVE GRAND PRIX OF DETROIT
DETROIT (June 1, 2001) - The Raceway on Belle Isle is going to be a hotbed
of road racing action during the 20th Anniversary Tenneco Automotive Grand
Prix of Detroit, June 15-17, when the CART FedEx Championship Series is
joined by the return of the Celebrity Team Challenge and the Detroit debut
of the Speedvision GT Championship.
Returning to the Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit this year is the
Celebrity Team Challenge. The race features local business, civic and media
personalities and benefits the Detroit Police Athletic League. This year
local leaders will compete against a growing list of national stars
including Michigan son and comedian Tim Allen, television star Alfonso
Ribeiro and movie actor Sean Patrick Flanery.
The SCCA Pro Racing-sanctioned Speedvision GT Championship will join the
CART FedEx Championship Series for the first time ever on the 2.346-mile
temporary Belle Isle street circuit.
"Our participation in the Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit weekend
is something we've been working toward for some time," said Mitch Wright,
Speedvision World Challenge General Manager. "With so many competitive
Speedvision GT manufacturer headquarters in Detroit, our race offers the
Motor City an opportunity to watch its production cars in action."
"The Tenneco Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit is a complete race weekend
with something for every fan, from open-wheel Champ Cars to great sports car
action," said Graham Hearns, Vice President of IMG Motorsports. "The
Speedvision World Challenge is a very competitive series that race fans will
really enjoy."
The SCCA Pro Racing Speedvision World Challenge Championships is one of
North America's premier production car-based series. The series features
such exotic sports cars and sedans as the Acura NSX, Audi S4, BMW M3,
Chevrolet Corvette, Dodge Viper, Ferrari 355, Ford Mustang Cobra, Porsche
911 and Saleen SR. The machines start life as showroom cars but are
modified with the best aftermarket pieces available.
The Celebrity Team Challenge and Speedvision GT Championship and join the
CART FedEx Championship Series, Trans-Am Series and Barber Dodge Pro Series
on the weekend schedule. The Celebrity Team Challenge and Speedvision GT
Championship races are both schedule for Sunday, June 17
