Toyota Announces Best-Ever Sales Month In 44 Years of
Business in the U.S.
TORRANCE, Calif., June 1 Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A.,
Inc., today reported its strongest month ever with May sales of 167,167, up
9.7 percent over the same period last year and shattering the previous mark,
set two months ago, by more than 10,000 units.
The Toyota Division recorded its all-time best-ever sales month with
146,886 units sold, up 8.4 percent over the same period last year. The Lexus
Division posted best-ever May sales with 20,281 vehicles, an increase of
19.9 percent.
Light trucks led the sales charge for the Toyota Division, setting a
best-ever sales month of 64,456 units sold, an increase of 36.2 percent over
last May. The all-new Highlander mid-size sport utility vehicle (SUV) posted
8,874 sales, its best-selling month since it was launched in late January.
The RAV4 compact SUV posted best-ever May sales of 7,880, an increase of
106.1 percent. The all-new Sequoia full-size SUV also enjoyed its best sales
month since it launched last fall, recording 6,242 units sold. The Tacoma
compact pickup posted strong sales of 14,990, up 17.6 percent.
The Prius gas/electric hybrid sedan continued to post impressive sales
with 1,126 units sold in May. The Corolla compact sedan recorded 25,484
sales, an increase of 0.1 percent.
The Lexus Division was paced by best-ever May passenger car sales of
12,513, an increase of 74.1 percent over the same period last year. The ES
300 entry-luxury sedan led the lineup with 3,637 sales, up 4.0 percent. The
LS 430 luxury sedan recorded 2,807 sales, an increase of 183.0 percent. The
all-new SC 430 hardtop convertible posted sales of 1,288, an increase of
5,266.7 percent. The IS 300 sport sedan posted steady sales of 2,285 units.
Sales of North American-built vehicles accounted for 64.1 percent of total
May sales.
