INDY 500: Scott Goodyear released from the hospital

June 1, 2001Indianapolis, IN (May 31, 2001) - Cheever Indy Racing driver Scott Goodyear, who suffered a back injury during the Indianapolis 500 on May 27, was released from Indianapolis' Methodist Hospital and returned home today.
Goodyear, twice a runner-up at the Indy 500, was injured on lap eight of this year's event when his #52 Thermos®Grill2Go™ Infiniti was hit by the spinning car of Sarah Fisher. The 41-year-old Canadian sustained a compression fracture of his L1 vertebra when his car slammed into the wall on the back straightaway.
Doctors estimate that Goodyear will require 8-12 weeks to recuperate from his injury. Goodyear will wear a back brace as part of the recovery process.
"First off, I'd like to say that the care that I received at Methodist Hospital was great," said Goodyear from his home near Indianapolis. "Dr. Terry Trammell, his staff, and the nurses at Methodist were terrific, but it's certainly nice to get back home and start recuperating."
"I'll return to Methodist in three weeks for a complete set of x-rays to make sure that things are healing according to Dr. Trammell's schedule. Walking and getting my strength back up are the first orders of business, and then I'll continue with a light weight program to keep the rest of my body in shape as my back recovers. My goal, once the brace is off, is to get back in a racecar as soon as possible."
