Chrysler Group Reports U.S. May Sales
* Minivan Sales up 20 Percent
* Chrysler Town & Country Sales Set New May Record
* 50,000 Orders Received for Jeep(R) Liberty
AUBURN HILLS, Mich., June 1 Chrysler Group reported U.S.
sales of 207,487 units in May 2001, a seven percent increase when compared to
April 2001. That total represents a decline of eight percent when compared to
May 2000, when sales were 226,348.
Minivan sales for the month were up 20 percent, at 42,329 units, compared
to May 2000. Leading the way was Chrysler Town & Country with 12,822 units --
an increase of 149 percent compared to May 2000.
"Dealers report the all-new Jeep(R) Liberty is going out of the showroom
as fast as it is coming in," said Gary Dilts, Senior Vice President -- Sales.
"Liberty is bringing in additional traffic and it is a younger, more
knowledgeable shopper." Dilts added that dealers have ordered more than
50,000 Jeep Liberty models.
Liberty production is ahead of schedule, said Dilts, currently at a rate
of 700 units per day.
Chrysler-branded truck sales for May were up 63 percent over May 2000.
Chrysler PT Cruiser set a May sales record of 10,323 units, nearly doubling
last year's mark.
Small car sales of 21,624 units were up 10 percent compared to last year.
Chrysler Sebring Coupe and Convertible led the way, up 56 percent and 21
percent, respectively, when compared to last May. Chrysler Sebring Sedan and
Dodge Stratus Coupe were also up 11 percent and 23 percent, respectively, when
compared to last month.
Other models up from last year's totals include Chrysler Prowler, Dodge
Intrepid, Dodge Viper, Dodge Caravan and Dodge Ram Wagon.
Inventory for May 2001 has decreased to a 64-day supply, compared to a 75-
day supply in May 2000. Chrysler Group reduced inventories in May 2001 to
510,911 units a 22 percent reduction from May 2000, when it had 657,063 units
in inventory.
