Mitsubishi Motors Reports Best May in History; Sales Growth of 7.2 Percent Over May 2000; Up 5.9 Percent for the Year

    CYPRESS, Calif., June 1 Mitsubishi Motor Sales of America,
Inc. (MMSA) today reported its best May in company history with vehicle sales
of 31,520 units, a 7.2 percent increase over May 2000, pushing the company's
2001 year-to-date sales up 5.9 percent higher than the same period last year.
    "As the industry continues to navigate fluctuating market conditions, our
sales are growing at a record-setting pace," said MMSA Executive Vice
President and COO Pierre Gagnon.  "Consumers are excited about our products
and we're in a great position to continue gaining market share."

    Some figures of note for MMSA's record-breaking May 2001 sales:

    -- May 2001 sales of 31,520 vehicles represents a 7.2 percent increase
       over May 2000 sales of 29,390 vehicles
    -- 2001 year-to-date sales of 131,532 vehicles represents a 5.9 percent
       increase over May 2000 year-to-date sales of 124,243 vehicles
    -- Galant had its best month ever with 10,987 units sold, up 33.3 percent
       over May 2000
    -- Eclipse Spyder had its best month ever with 2,074 units sold, up
       89.9 percent over May 2000, marking a full year of monthly
       year-over-year sales increases for Eclipse Spyder
