TROY, Mich. -
FOR RELEASE: May 14, 2001TROY, Mich. - Saturn Corporation will help bring the high speeds and heart-pounding sprints of international professional cycling to Fairfield County, Connecticut as a sponsor of the first Housatonic Valley Classic cycling race. The race will take place on May 20, 2001. On race day, spectators can also test their own racing ability by taking the CyberBike Challenge hosted by Saturn retailers. Saturn's CyberBike Challenge allows the public to race in total safety on the new high-tech system where two cyclists compete against each other over long or short distances while securely seated on stationary LeMond pro racing bikes. The race is translated into an animated graphic where each racer can see his or her exact position in the race. To allow younger Cyber-racers to participate, there are two child-sized bicycles.
"Saturn is involved in the Housatonic in numerous ways," said Christine Rivers, Saturn Sales, Service and Marketing sponsorship and promotions manager. "Saturn is the Classic's official car, which will be used throughout the race. Local Saturn retailers will sponsor vehicle displays and activities, and Saturn's own pro cycling team will compete."
Race fans attending the cycling event can also pick up Team Saturn giveaways and take a look at the new Saturn VUE that will be available later this year.
As the official vehicle for the Housatonic, Saturn S- and L-Series cars will be used by race officials, medical team, communications team, "broom wagon" - the car that picks up those cyclists who cannot continue the race - and vehicles that are on the track to support the needs of all racing teams.
The Saturn Cycling Team, which is expected to do well in the race, is dominating American racing this season. Both the men's and women's teams are ranked No. 1 on the National Racing Calendar (NCR) standing, which links key American events by a points system established by the U.S. Cycling Federation.
Team Saturn cyclist Trent Klasna leads the men's individual NRC standings, holding a 120-point lead, and teammate Anna Milward holds the women's No. 1 spot.
