Moore ready for redemption, victory at Belleville (BHB2001-04)

(May 30, 2001) - Mitchell Moore is happy to be racing sprint cars again, happy to be back on dirt and happily married. What would make Moore even more happy would be a win at Belleville. This Sunday, June 3, the famed Belleville High Banks in Belleville, Kan., waves the green flag on an exciting 2001 racing season with the electrifying NSCA Ethanol E-10 Sprint Series, featuring some of the Midwest's hottest 360 sprint car drivers. For Moore, the race will be a shot at redemption. The second-generation racer from Edgerton, Kan., was on his way to an apparent victory this past Friday night as the NSCA opened their 2001 season at Nebraska Raceway Park in Greenwood, Neb. Racing in his first-ever NSCA event, Moore took command of the main event at the drop of the green flag and appeared headed for glory when the left sideboard of his top wing folded down. Despite an ill-handling race car, he continued to drive a superb race and hung on for a second-place finish. Moore will be looking to reverse his fortunes when the talent-laden touring series takes on the "World's Fastest Half Mile Dirt Track" this Sunday. Driving for car owners Don Williams and Shirley Beers, Moore is poised to pilot the Singer-powered Eagle in defense of his home state against a contingent of drivers from surrounding states. It was in Pleasanton, Kan., several years ago where he captured his first sprint win by out-running his father on Fathers Day. Although just 23, Moore has a lifetime of experience. Since he was five years old, he has driven everything from micro-midgets to late models and roadracing bikes, and has experience on both dirt and asphalt tracks. But it's on dirt where he's at his best. "I'm glad to be back in a sprint car," he said, "because the driver has more to do with the reason you are fast than pavement." Moore will have to be fast to win this weekend against a contingent of veteran 360 sprint pilots on the historic high-banked Belleville High Banks. Defending NSCA Ethanol E-10 Series champion Rick Ideus of Lincoln, Neb., is among the favored entries, along with fellow Cornhusker State drivers Rodney Droud, with Mike Chadd, Jason Danley, Terry Ledger and Jeremiah Sillman, plus Missouri's Ray Lee Goodwin Jr., Oklahoma's Christie Passmore, and Terry and Tadd Holliman from Iowa. The Belleville High Banks pit gate opens this Sunday, June 3, at 3 p.m. (CST), with spectator gates swinging open at 5. Hot laps get underway at 6:30 and the green flag unfurls for the first heat race at 7:30. Adult general admission is $12 and children are $5. Pit passes are $20. Joining the 360 Sprints will be the thrilling CNCTA Friesen Challenge Series, featuring I.M.C.A. late models. Cruisers will also compete on the infield short track. The Belleville High Banks, located in Belleville, Kan., is managed by a volunteer racing committee that host 10-12 racing events annually. "The World's Fastest Half-Mile Dirt Track" allows drivers the rare opportunity to run "wide open" the entire track, and the sweeping oval is one of the most demanding test of endurance and skill for drivers. The track's mainstay is the annual Belleville Midget Nationals, held every year during the first weekend in August. As the nation's most prestigious midget car race of the year, the best equipment, owners and drivers flock to the small rural community of 3,500, which is transformed into a racing Mecca of more than 30,000 people each August.
