SCHATZ DOMINATES OUTLAWS, HEARN DOES SAME IN MODIFIEDS

SCHATZ DOMINATES OUTLAWS, HEARN DOES SAME IN MODIFIEDS

WEST LEBANON, NY- The World of Outlaws Sprint Cars made their annual
stop at Lebanon Valley Speedway Monday night. Donny Schatz, from Minot, N.D.,
was the winner of the 25-lap World of Outlaw A-main sponsored by CARQUEST
Auto Parts. The DIRT modifieds were also on hand and Brett Hearn, from
Sussex, N.J., won the 30-lap feature.
Donny Schatz took the lead at the drop of the green flag and never looked
back. Schatz was making quick work of the field and encountered lapped
traffic by the third lap. Steve Kinser ran a majority of the race with smoke
showing off the left side header, but he held on for a fourth place finish.
The most serious incident of the feature came on lap 12. Former Lebanon
Valley regular, Carmon Carnibucci flipped hard in turn four. Thankfully he
was able to get out of the car under his own power.
When green flag racing resumed Schatz motored away once again. Tim
Schaffer was running third on the restart, but had mechanical problems and
dropped from the event. No one could come close to Schatz and he took home
his second World of Outlaw A-main of the season. Schatz was able to improve
his finish from the 2000 feature by one. Daryn Pittman was second, with Joey
Saldana third, Steve Kinser fourth and Mark Kinser fifth.
Joey Saldana had the fast time for the night in Outlaw qualifying. His
time of 16.550 was a new track record for the Valley. Mark Kinser, Daryn
Pittman and Donny Schatz won the O'Reilly heat races. The winner of the
Channellock Dash was Donny Schatz. Jason Myers won the B-main.
Brett Hearn driving his familiar Budweiser #3 grabbed the lead at the
start of the 30-lap modified feature and never looked back. Problems for
Chris Moore early in the event as he slowed suddenly in turn two. He would
return, but would not be a factor. Ronnie Johnson was busy holding off Rich
Ricci Jr for the runner-up position on lap six. Actually those two did battle
the whole race with Johnson holding off Ricci in the end.
Hearn began to encounter lapped traffic by lap five. The first yellow
flag of the race came out on lap eleven when John Hewitt suffered a left rear
flat tire. J.R. Heffner used the restart to move up to the second position.
Kenny Tremont and Dickie Larkin waged a battle for sixth at the halfway point
of the event. Lapped traffic continued to plague Hearn, but did not slow him
down too much. In the final stages of the race Hearn had opened a
half-straightaway lead over Heffner and Heffner was a full straightaway ahead
of third.
In the end it was Hearn crossing the line first followed by Heffner,
Johnson, Ricci and Tremont. It was Hearn's 39th modified feature victory at
Lebanon Valley. Heffner, Mike Benson and Ricci won the modified heat races.
