NEW YORK--May 25, 2001--Advanced Mechanical Products Company Inc. (AMP) has announced the launch of lifft(TM) a new ergonomic consumer product that will assure mobility for millions of Americans and provide them with the needed leverage and support to easily and safely get into and out of their cars, minivans and SUVs.
The lifft(TM) is a solution for everyone: young or old, driver or passenger, with diminished function, chronic disability or temporary setback who rely on their automobiles for their daily life. Alone, there are 35 million Americans over the age of 65, 90 percent of whom actively drive to maintain their independence and freedom. There are millions of more Americans who rely on assistive devices, suffer chronic back pain or are experiencing temporary injury or even pregnancy, all of which impede their mobility.
"I began having a great deal of trouble getting out of my car because of low back pain," said Dr. William Pordy, a physician who invented the patents-pending product. "lifft(TM) is a simple, universal device that will give very many drivers and passengers like myself the control, confidence, and that extra lift to easily and safely get themselves in and out of their cars." lifft(TM) was developed in partnership with Smart Design, the firm known for creating consumer products such as OXO Good Grips(R) that are easy to use by people of all abilities and strengths.
lifft(TM) fits into the U-shaped bracket attached to every car's doorframe (called a "striker"). To use, simply insert, lift and go! Because lifft(TM) is only 10 inches long and weighs less than 10 ounces, it fits easily in your car door pocket, glove compartment, even your handbag or coat pocket for travel. Made of high-quality alloy aluminum, lifft(TM) is engineered for strength and its bright red Santoprene(R) handle provides a comfortable, ergonomic grip that's not slippery even when wet.
Strikers have been a standard component in passenger vehicles and trucks since the late 1980's as established by federal regulations. lifft(TM) is designed to fit easily and securely in every car equipped with a one-piece striker, including most vehicles built since the late 1980's. lifft(TM) is not intended for use in cars with two-piece strikers as found in the Ford Crown Victoria/Mercury Grand Marquis/Lincoln Town Car group and older model Explorers and Mountaineers. Select Swedish and German luxury imports: older model Audi, BMW, Saab, Volvo and all Mercedes have strikers whose openings are significantly smaller; lifftEURO(TM) -- engineered especially for these cars -- will be available soon.
