Father's Day Car Shows 'Celebrate The Old Man
and His Old Car'; Hemmings Motor News Offers Free Help and
Cash Prizes
BENNINGTON, Vt., May 22 Dads weary of yet-another-necktie
and the Father's Day buffet at a local eatery will appreciate Father's Day Car
Shows, either as participant or spectator, and Hemmings Motor News is helping
hundreds of car clubs nationwide "Celebrate The Old Man and His Old Car" with
Father's Day 2001 Car Shows. It's an idea taking hold all around the country.
By early April over 400 car clubs and civic organizations, in all 50 U.S.
states and five Canadian provinces, had already joined the Hemmings Father's
Day 2001 program. Together they predict involvement of over 50,000 vintage
cars and trucks, street rods, and other collector cars. Many more are
expected to join in the fun (last year, on much shorter notice, over 300 clubs
participated).
Each car club or sponsoring organization is invited to create its own
unique and enjoyable event that both celebrates Father's Day and fosters
community involvement and awareness of the collector car hobby. Hemmings
Motor News will award a $250 prize to the sponsor of the most imaginative
Father's Day event and another $250 prize to the Father's Day event garnering
the most positive news media publicity for its activities.
Events "celebrating Dad's day his way" range from full-fledged Car Shows
and Concours d'Elegance with technical judging by experts in official straw
hats, all the way down to informal cruise-ins, picnic tours, dust-offs, and
ice cream runs. What they have in common is a Father's Day Weekend date (a
few even run Friday through Sunday), a Father's Day focus, and lots of free
help from Hemmings Motor News.
Hemmings assists participating non-profit clubs and organizations by
providing each event-sponsoring group free event promotion in the monthly
Hemmings Motor News and on-line at http://www.hemmings.com/fathersday, free
event materials, signs and raffle prizes, and commemorative dash plaques.
At Hemmings headquarters in Bennington, Vermont, last year, the magazine's
staff organized a gathering of 45 collector cars and hobbyists who paraded
across town to an informal car show on the grounds of the Vermont Veterans
Home. There, veterans reminisced with car owners over the good old cars of
the good old days (including a beautifully restored US Army World War II
jeep), and enjoyed free popcorn from a 1929 Ford Model AA popcorn truck owned
and operated by Hemmings. The Veteran's Home's Commandant, Earl Hollings,
says, "Both residents and staff are looking forward to this year's Father's
Day Car Show, because they loved having all those visitors here last year."
Even if the dad in your life isn't presently involved in the collector car
hobby, taking him to a nearby car show may well be the best surprise gift his
family could give him. Simply visit http://www.hemmings.com/fathersday and
click on "Father's Day Participants" to see whether there's a Father's Day Car
Show near you. And if your local car club's not involved in the Father's Day
2001 Celebration, ask them why they're missing such a great opportunity!
