DETROIT, May 21 The latest Initial Quality Survey from
J.D. Power contains some big surprises. Sure, Lexus continues to dominate the
top spot, but who'd expect Jaguar to come in so close behind -- or to see the
Dodge Intrepid score higher than both the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord?
TheCarConnection.com has the complete quality story, including TCC's own
Readers' Quality survey. Check out this week's edition to see who TCC's own
sample chose as the brands with the best quality reputation.
Ford is recalling 57,000 new Explorer and Mercury Mountaineer SUVs --
again -- to replace damaged tires. Meanwhile, reports suggest Firestone could
face another recall involving even more tires than last year. During the
Summer of 2000, Firestone recalled 6.5 million tires linked to over 170
deaths. TheCarConnection.com has the latest news on how this could affect
you.
It once "owned" the American passenger van market with its
cute-as-a-button Microbus, but these days, you may not even know Volkswagen is
still a player with its roomy, slab-sided Eurovan. TCC takes VW's mini-entry
for a ride, and then looks at what's in store for the German automaker -- as
it gets ready to launch an all-new Microbus.
Speaking of German automakers, turn to TheCarConnection for spy shots of
the 2004 BMW X3, the downsized version of its hot-selling X5 Sport-Activity
Vehicle.
This week's reviews also include the sporty Lexus ES300, Mitsubishi's 2002
Lancer, and the tire-spinning Corvette Z06. And see how Mazda is entering the
digital era with its trick MP3 -- a sporty sedan and a digital audio machine,
all in one package.
Racing fans, don't miss this week's round-up of results from the world of
motorsports. And check out TCC's report on the return of Britain's legendary
MG to the equally legendary Le Mans 24-hour race.
Don't worry, be happy -- burning as much gas as you want. Was that the
message of President Bush's new energy program, which did not call for an
increase in automotive fuel economy? TCC takes a look.
In this week's columns, TCC's OnSite Mechanic helps you get your car
running better than ever; get tips on minding your motorcycle; find the best
deal of the week in new and used cars; and discover some nifty Net ideas from
Denise McCluggage.
TCC also takes a look at the unexpected revival of the vehicle that
defined the Leave it to Beaver generation. It's hot -- just don't call it a
station wagon.
