Solid Edge CAD Design Software Powers Kelley
Racing into Pole Position At Indy 500
CYPRESS, Calif., May 21 Kelley Racing, supported by the
use of Solid Edge computer-aided design software, qualified as the inside,
front-row starter for the May 27 Indy 500. Scott Sharp, in his #8 Delphi
Automotive Systems car, posted the fastest four-lap average of 226.037 mph
during the recent Pole Day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Teammate Mark
Dismore and his #28 car qualified fourth and will start inside the second row
on race day. Sunday's Indy 500 begins will be televised at 11 a.m. (EDT) on
ABC TV.
Kelley Racing uses Solid Edge from UGS as its computer-aided
design software system for use in Indy Racing League competition. Kelley
Racing will use Solid Edge to quickly implement design updates and optimize
components on their cars.
Solid Edge, loaded on a laptop computer, is used to design and redesign
custom parts for Kelley's two cars, often right in the pit area as testing
takes place at various tracks across the country.
"We chose Solid Edge because we can make changes on the fly and check the
designs for interfering parts and stress analysis before we rush them off to
be manufactured for a race that may be taking place within hours," says Jim
Freudenberg, general manager of Kelley Racing. "Testing time is very
expensive and limited on an Indy Racing League track. Solid Edge maximizes
that testing time investment." Kelley Racing also uses DesignSpace from ANSYS
Inc. (Canonsburg, PA), a fully integrated finite element analysis software
package from the Solid Edge Voyager Program.
Kelley Racing's engineers support two cars, Scott Sharp's #8 and Mark
Dismore's #28. Solid Edge is used to customize suspension and steering
systems, wing pillars and many other components. Kelley Racing also uses
Solid Edge to design shop tools, fixtures and jigs used to work on and test
the cars and their major components.
"Design engineering is only part of our job," says Eric Bretzman, team
engineer at Kelley. "Our CAD system had to be easy to learn and use and
maintain a high retention rate for us. Solid Edge allows us to focus on the
fast pace and extreme demands of the race season."
Kelley Racing is supported locally by Fin-el, an Indianapolis firm that
provides engineering and design services in addition to sales and support of
engineering software. Fin-el, a Solid Edge Value-Added Reseller, specializes
in product development, component design optimization, and virtual prototyping
services through 3-D computer modeling, kinematic simulation, and finite-
element analysis.
Machinery Design Productivity: The Solid Edge Advantage
Solid Edge is the proven design engineering solution that can reduce time
to market by an achievable 50 percent using STREAM, an exclusive technology
that accelerates the engineering process. The choice of leading machinery
designers worldwide, Solid Edge has been selected by companies such as Alcoa,
NEC Engineering and Volvo as a strategic tool to help them realize the
benefits of better quality, lower costs, and shorter delivery cycles.
Solid Edge is uniquely positioned to deliver exceptional value to
machinery designers. Solid Edge directly addresses the practical aspects of
design engineering with powerful CAD functions that are extremely easy to
learn and use. With an unmatched ability to capture design intelligence,
Solid Edge ensures more accurate and rapid design change turnaround and
increased productivity for machinery development.
The Solid Edge Voyager Program includes more than 150 downstream
engineering software applications in such disciplines as finite element
analysis, manufacturing, kinematics and dynamics, electro-mechanical, rapid
prototyping, standard parts, product data management, translation,
view/redline/animation and hardware solutions.
Written for Microsoft Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows 2000 and Windows ME
operating systems, Solid Edge is distributed in eight languages to customers
around the world, including Boeing, Kaiser Optical, Alcoa, Volvo, L-3
Communications, Ohio State University, Yale University, University of
Edinburgh, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, NASA, Pella Windows, Royal Air
Force, S&C Electric, Lincoln Electric, WMF, ULMA Group, Electromagnetic
Sciences, Liebert Corp., Kaeser Kompressoren, Prodrive, USSC Group, Seiko,

About Kelley Racing
Located in Indianapolis, IN, Kelley Racing was founded in 1997 by Tom
Kelley, President of the Kelley Automotive Group based in Fort Wayne, IN. In
1998, their first full season in the IRL, the team won two races and had a
high finish of fourth in the driver standings. In 1999, Kelley Racing again
won two races and had a high finish of third in the driver standings. In
2000, the team had one race win and had a high finish of fifth in the driver
standings. The current driver line-up remains the same that it has been since
1998 consisting of Scott Sharp in Car #8 and Mark Dismore in car #28. Indy
Racing League races are broadcast by major TV networks. Visit Kelley Racing
