Con-Way Central Express To Open New High-Volume Freight Assembly Center in Fremont, Indiana; Larger Facility To Accommodate Future Growth
ANN ARBOR, Mich.--MAY 21, 2001--Con-Way Central Express (CCX), a less-than-truckload (LTL) commercial freight carrier and an operating unit of Con-Way Transportation Services, Inc. (CON-WAY), will open a new freight assembly center in Fremont, IN this fall.The facility will replace CCX's current operation in Coldwater, Mich. According to company officials the 13.5-mile move to the new, larger facility located at 6755 Old State Road 27 in Fremont will better accommodate anticipated business growth. "With 30 more dock doors and easy access to I-69 and the east-west I-80 and I-90 Turnpike, we will be in a better position to serve customers as we grow," said Richard V. Palazzo, president and chief executive officer of CCX. The new freight hub will enable CCX to provide next-day service to markets in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Illinois, Kentucky, Wisconsin, Iowa, Missouri, Pennsylvania and Knoxville, Tennessee. Second-day service will be provided to the Northeast, most of the South, the upper Midwest and parts of Colorado and Wyoming.
Located on 57 acres, the structure will have 144 doors, 12,000 square feet of office space and 63,000 square feet of dock area. The facility will handle in excess of three million pounds of freight a day. "The economy is slow right now, but we are planning for future growth. Planning and investing in adequate infrastructure is critical. CON-WAY has always reinvested in the needed assets to assure we continue to produce the high performance results our customers expect. Being in Fremont will give us the capacity to meet our customers' service needs," added Palazzo. The company has 12 other Indiana facilities in Ft. Wayne, Gary, Kokomo, Muncie, Crawfordsville, Indianapolis, Richmond, Terre Haute, Columbus, Bedford, Vincennes and Evansville.
Randy Barton, currently the manager of the Coldwater facility, will manage the Fremont terminal, which will employ 44 people. A CON-WAY employee since 1992, he has 15 years of transportation experience.
