May 21, 2001Watkins Glen, N.Y. (May 20, 2001) - It was a sprint to the finish at the Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series three-hour race at Watkins Glen International today, as Doug Goad (Farmington Hills, Mich.) and Stu Haynor (Yorba Linda, Calif.) came out of a caution to the green and white flag waving together. Goad's strong lead in the #11 Powell Motorsports Corvette had been cut short when a late yellow came out, allowing Haynor in the #35 Phoenix American Motorsports Corvette a chance to sprint through the 3.377-mile road course with Goad for checkered.
But Goad would not relinquish his lead, setting the fastest lap of the race under the white flag to take home the victory. The 2:03.901 lap gave Goad and co-driver Devon Powell (Port Perry, Ont.) their second Grand-Am Cup victory this season.
"If there had been anyone else behind me, that lap would have been a 2:05," said Goad, who won the American GT class in the Rolex Sports Car Series Six Hours of The Glen on Saturday night. "That lap came out of pure terror for the fact that Stu Haynor was behind me gunning for the win."
The Canadian duo of Robert Julien (Toronto, Ont.) and Jean-Francois Dumoulin (Trois-Rivieres, Que.) piloted the #19 Fiorano Racing Porsche 993 to the front of the GS class and sixth-place overall. The Porsche was closely followed by the #19 Speedsource Porsche 911 of David Haskell (Plantation, Fla.) and Sylvain Tremblay (Pompano Beach, Fla.), who finished only three seconds back for second place in the GS class.
The top ST-class award went to Mike Van Sicklen (Nashville, Tenn.) and Bob Endicott (San Pedro, Calif.) in the #64 King Motorsports Acura Integra R. The Acura was able to take the lead when the #72 Team Spartanburg BMW Z3 Coupe, which had lead since the start of the race, had an extended pit stop to repair its brake lights. The BMW slid back to ninth in class.
Another BMW Z3 Coupe did make it to the ST-class podium, as #34 Villacon Racing's Bransen Patch (Charlotte, N.C.) and Jeff Trask (Santa Ana, Calif.) finished second in the class.
The C2K class podium had a dramatic change in the final lap of the race when the class leader became entangled in a four-car pile up in the esses. The #41 Planet Earth Motorsports Acura Integra GSR dropped back to third-place in the class when it was unable to take the checkered flag due to the collision on the final lap. Pete Halsmer (Bloomfield, Mich.) and Bryan Johnson (Marysville, Ohio) with the #69 Honda of America Racing Team Honda Civic Si picked up the class victory, while the #27 Bill Fenton Motorsports Honda Civic Si took second-place honors in the class.
The three-hour race at The Glen marked the fourth race of the season for the Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series. The series will next travel to Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for the ConAgra Foods U.S. Road Racing Classic, June 7-10.
