INDY 500: Cheever Indy Racing continues to prepare as rain washes out practice

May 18, 2001Indianapolis, IN (May 18,2001) - Persistent rainforced the cancellation of Indianapolis 500 practice May 18, the first time apractice day was completely washed out at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway infour years. The last time no cars turned laps on ascheduled practice day due to rain was May 3, 1997. The final full practice takes place from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. (EST)Saturday.
Team Manager Dick Caron: “Wespent the day making subtle set-up changes to Scott’s and Eddie’s car. They’re things we’d like to trytomorrow. We also put a fresh engine inthe back-up car so that we can run it Saturday and Sunday.”
Chief Mechanic Dane Harte: “We don’t want to run the primary cars muchon Saturday and Sunday. They’ll be verybusy days and we don’t want to take the chance of getting caught up in anyincidents with the primary cars.” Eddie Cheever qualified the #51Excite@Home Cheever Indy Racing Infiniti at 222.152mph. Scott Goodyear qualified the #52 Thermos® Grill2Go™ Cheever IndyRacing Infiniti at 222.529mph.
