MARENGO, Ill., May 18 In celebration of the 75th
Anniversary of Pontiac Motor Division, Mecum Auction Company of Marengo, IL.
has chosen a 1969 Pontiac Trans-Am Convertible to be the feature car at their
14th annual Rockford Spring Classic Collector Car Auction. The event is to be
held May 25th through May 27th at the Boone County Fairgrounds located one
hour Northwest of Chicago's O'Hare airport.
1969 was the inaugural year of this hi-bred muscle car (which is still in
production today). The Trans-Am was a very limited production model in '69
with just over 600 examples built and only 8 of them were fashioned as
convertibles. Based on the Firebird platform that started production in 1967
under the guidance of John Delorean, the 1969 Trans-Am convertible has carried
a mystique in the collector car world for many years. As of the 8 built, only
7 have been accounted for and the constant treasure hunt has always enhanced
the lore. The Pontiac Historic Society has documented this to be one of the
original 8 says auctioneer and world famous muscle car evaluator Dana Mecum.
"This car could fetch as much as a quarter of a million dollars" says Mecum,
"that's big league money for a production model car and world record
atmosphere for a Pontiac."
Mecum states that the car will be sold on Saturday afternoon the 26th of
May. The Trans-Am will be the centerpiece of the Rockford Spring Classic that
will have 500 vehicles cross the auction block during the 3-day event.
