AAA Statement on White House Energy Proposals

ORLANDO, Fla.--May 17, 2001--Release of the Bush Administration's energy plan sets the stage for a long-overdue debate on the nation's energy future. The time for finger-pointing has passed. Consumers expect the Congress and the White House to work together to develop plans and policies that will meet the nation's current and future energy needs. Unless current bottlenecks in the energy supply chain are addressed with a comprehensive and long-term strategy, we will continue to be frustrated by shortages and period gasoline price hikes.
Widespread acceptance of good energy conservation practices by all consumers can provide interim relief from high prices and lay the foundation for wiser long-term use of finite resources. AAA urges motorists to do their part by being frugal consumers of energy during the interim period when new sources of supply and capacity are brought on-line.
AAA will carefully review the Administration's proposals prior to endorsing any specific set of recommendations, and will continue to play an active role in educating motorists on ways to conserve fuel.
