"Delphi is committed to ensuring the success of minority supplier
development and we are pleased to be recognized for our efforts," said Walter
Jennings, Delphi's manager of minority supplier development. "Minority
sourcing is a criteria of DaimlerChrysler for awarding business to suppliers,
and Delphi has exceeded those procurement targets through our successful
minority supplier development program and initiatives."
Delphi was presented with the award today at Detroit's Cobo Center during
a supplier minority-training program sponsored by DaimlerChrysler. Jennings
and Gary Skelding, account manager, DaimlerChrysler North America, accepted
the award on behalf of Delphi.
Diversity of Delphi's supply base continues to be a strategic and focused
initiative of Delphi's minority supplier development program. The success of
Delphi's program can be attributed to the minority coordinators throughout
Delphi who promote minority development on the regional councils within their
respective communities.
One successful program that Delphi sponsors is the "Automotive Matchmaker"
conference, which brings together purchasing agents from major automotive
suppliers and manufacturers with minority business entrepreneurs specializing
in the automotive industry. The conference is held annually in Ohio and
continues to be one of the largest minority supplier conferences in the United
States. The event has generated more than $100 million in new contracts to
minority suppliers.
Delphi's many minority supplier development initiatives have led to an
average growth rate of 13 percent annually for minority expenditures over the
last three years. In 2000, Delphi achieved $529 million in minority business
enterprise procurements, representing a 17 percent increase over 1999. The
2000 minority supplier procurements represent 5.2 percent of Delphi's total
outside purchases. Delphi has established aggressive strategies to reach
10 percent minority procurement by 2005.
Delphi has received numerous minority development awards over the past few
years including several for Corporation of the Year from the Dayton Minority
Supplier Development Council (four-time winner); the Michigan Minority
Business Development Council; and from the Upstate Minority Purchasing
Council. In addition, Delphi previously received the Ohio Governor Bob Taft's
2000 Minority Business Development Recognition Award.
