Exide Technologies' United Kingdom Plant
Receives ISO Certification
CWMBRAN, Wales, May 15 Exide Technologies , the
global leader in stored electrical energy solutions, continues to bolster its
position of environmental leadership as another of its facilities receives
positive recognition for superior performance.
The Exide plant in Cwmbran, Wales, in the United Kingdom recently received
ISO/TS 16949 certification. The factory manufactures approximately 1.5
million lead-acid batteries per year for Exide's Transportation Business Group
for both original-equipment and aftermarket sales.
The ISO/TS 16949 achievement follows the plant's ISO 14001 certification
in December 2000, both of which were sanctioned by the British Standards
Institute. The ISO/TS 16949 certification audit at Cwmbran covered all
aspects of plant business. It incorporated the requirements of several
quality standards, including the international standard ISO 9000, the
Ford/Chrysler/General Motors quality system known as QS 9000, French auto
manufacturers' EAQF standard and German automakers' VDA standard.
ISO certification results from independent auditors verifying that the
processes influencing product quality and the environment conform to the
relevant legal and standards requirements. According to the standards
organization, the objective is to give the organization's management and its
customers confidence that the organization is in control of its processes.
"The certification process began with a documentation audit prior to the
actual on-site, three-day assessment -- for a total of five working days,"
said Vincent Mann, plant manager of Exide Technologies' Cwmbran facility.
"The rigid process covered 19 of 20 existing standards as well as customer-
specific requirements for Ford and Peugeot Motaquip. The section on servicing
was the only permitted exception. Cross-functional teams from across the
plant worked together to drive the effort and continue to work toward our next
goal -- ISO 18001 certification."
Exide facilities in Horton, Norway; Poznan, Poland; Bad Lauterberg,
Budingen and Weiden, Germany; and Manzanares, Spain; have also received ISO
certificates in recent months.
"The people in every Exide Technologies facility around the world are
committed to deliver world-class levels of environmental and operational
excellence," said Craig Muhlhauser, President and Chief Operating Officer of
Exide Technologies. "In today's competitive business environment, ISO
certifications demonstrate our commitment to be recognized as the preferred
provider of energy storage systems globally."
