Webraska Launches IbDN Lite(R), the First Wireless Navigation
Service Compatible With All Global Communication Standards
DETROIT and POISSY, France, May 15 Webraska, the worldwide
provider of real-time wireless navigation services, today announced the launch
of the first wireless navigation service that covers both Europe and North
America. The service is downloadable to all hand-held or vehicle-mounted
PDAs.
The Internet-based Distributed Navigation Lite service (IbDN Lite(R))
provides turn-by-turn navigation for motorists and pedestrians alike, from
departure to final destination, supported by voice and graphic directions.
Navigation instructions sent to users are based on current traffic conditions.
The service also provides points-of-interest information and routing to POIs
based upon user preferences.
It's extremely simple to use: The user has only to enter the destination
address, desired points-of-interest, and travel preferences (by freeways or
secondary routes; by shortest distance; or by time -- taking into account
traffic considerations, etc.). The request then goes from the user's internal
or external PDA modem to a Webraska server over GSM, GPRS or CDMA, which
calculates the itinerary and prepares the appropriate maps and navigation
instructions. The information is highly compressed and sent back to the PDA
in a matter of seconds. The connection between the server and the mobile
terminal can then be severed, while the user is guided step-by-step and
street-by-street, with voice and graphic assistance, to his/her final
destination.
In addition, since IbDN Lite is based on complete connectivity and
interactivity between the terminal and Webraska servers, end-users can access
the world of mobile commerce from their personal units, or they can prepare
their trip itinerary from the office and request that the information be
downloaded to the vehicle.
Webraska is beginning "qualification" programs for its technology
offerings in cooperation with world leaders in the automotive, telematics and
telecommunications industries across Europe and the United States. These are
the companies that will commercialize and distribute Webraska's complete
navigation solution throughout their sales networks by the end of this year,
integrating it with their own value-added services.
Webraska adds to the security and comfort of drivers and pedestrians in
their local, regional and international travels because of a simple and easy-
to-use device that is quick, reliable and inexpensive. At the same time, IbDN
Lite will revolutionize navigation, making interactive applications and
services totally targeted toward the needs of end-users, thanks to the
knowledge of their position by remote servers.
The launch of IbDN Lite is another step in Webraska's strategy to develop
innovative technology solutions for professionals in the automotive,
telematics and telecommunications industries -- a range of reliable and
innovative products and services that cover a variety of needs in the
navigation market. A major partnership was announced last month with Borg
Instruments to launch a first-tier low-cost navigation terminal by the end of
the year, which will permit navigation data to be downloaded onto flash cards.
The launch of IbDN Lite(R), which allows real-time navigation on PDAs,
will be followed by a technology offering similarly based on distributed
navigation, and destined to be the in-vehicle terminal solutions for car
manufacturers and equipment suppliers.
About Webraska
Webraska offers innovative technology and services to professionals in the
automotive and transportation industries. With Webraska technology, car
manufacturers, equipment suppliers, telematics, and mobile operators can
rapidly launch and flexibly upgrade applications and services for real-time,
turn-by-turn personal navigation and fleet management.
The Webraska patented technology called IbDN(R) (Internet-based
Distributed Navigation) enables vehicles to provide real-time and optimized
turn-by-turn navigation guidance using mapping and content data provided by
the remote Webraska Global Navigation Server (GNS). This server uses powerful
algorithms to tightly compress data prepared and sent to the user terminal,
allowing fast response time and low communication cost.
Turning mobile devices into worldwide personal navigation systems, along
with Webraska's Personal Navigation Suite(TM) of valued-added services, helps
solve mobile user needs everyday. Webraska technologies increase revenues and
brand recognition for leading service providers around the world, including
SFR, TIM, Vizzavi, KPN, Belgacom, Airtel, Orange, ADAC, VoiceStream and M1.
Webraska's technology is already used by industry leaders, including PSA,
Sagem, Wireless Car, IBM, Nortel, Oracle, Openwave, Alcatel, SignalSoft,
Cellpoint, CT Motion, and Acunia.
The company is headquartered in Poissy, France and has offices in London,
Brussels, Madrid, Amsterdam, Milan, Stockholm, Tokyo, Singapore, Melbourne,
Montreal, and Detroit.
Webraska will exhibit and demonstrate its automotive technology and
services at Eye For Auto in Detroit (15-16 May 2001) at the Auto Interiors
Electronic Pavilion (Booth 344).
