"The entire SAE organization and, especially, its A World In Motion
program are delighted to play a part in helping America's Promise to realize
its mission," said Schilke. "We join America's Promise in fulfilling their
five promises to our nation's youth, and we enthusiastically renew our
commitment to this fine organization."
America's Promise was founded after the Presidents' Summit For America's
Future in 1997 where Presidents G.H.W. Bush, Carter, Clinton and Ford, with
Nancy Reagan representing President Reagan, challenged the country to make
children and youth a national priority. Retired General Colin L. Powell is
the founding chairman. The mission of America's Promise is to mobilize people
from every sector of American life to build the character and competence of
youth by fulfilling the Five Promises: caring adults, safe places, a healthy
start, marketable skills and opportunities to serve.
Currently, A World in Motion reaches 1.5 million children across the
country, and more than 15,000 schools and volunteer mentor engineers are
involved. A World in Motion has pledged to reach an additional 1,000 schools
by 2003 and to work aggressively with state boards of education seeking their
commitments to adopt A World in Motion programming on a statewide basis.
An innovative, hands-on physical science curriculum, A World in Motion
excites elementary and middle-school students about math and science by
bringing authentic engineering design experiences into the classroom.
Designed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International), the A
World in Motion curriculum joins teachers, students and volunteer practicing
engineers and scientists together in an exploration of physical science.
