Agilent Technologies Inc. Teams With Chicago Miniature Lamp, an SLI Company, To Serve the Automotive Market

CANTON, Mass., May 14 Agilent Technologies, Semiconductor
Products Group and Chicago Miniature Lamp, Inc., (CML) an
SLI, Inc. company, have signed an agreement under which CML will
represent Agilent's visible LED product line and opto-electronic technology to
the automotive marketplace.
"Combining the LED technology expertise of Agilent with the CML systems
approach will benefit automotive OEM's and their first tier suppliers," says
Paul Flynn, CML president. "Teaming up with Agilent is a major step toward
our goal of providing one-stop, total lighting solutions as the automotive
interior lighting market goes increasingly electronic."
"Agilent brings new and exciting LED products to the market and we view
our agreement with CML as a positive step to insure our products are available
to automotive engineers and designers," adds Vince Feorenzo, Agilent American
sales manager.
Agilent's lamp expertise is regarded as world-class, as is CML's LED
packaging and subassembly capability for automotive interior and instrument
lighting. "With this new pairing, automotive manufacturing will enjoy
innovative opto-electronic systems that will define automotive interior
lighting for the 21st century," adds Mr. Flynn.
Frank M. Ward, Chairman and CEO of CML parent company, SLI, Inc., states,
"The number of interior lights in the average automobile has more than tripled
from model year 1995 to 2000, with a growing share going to LEDs. Safety
legislation now requires lighted indicators for anti-lock brakes and other
features on new passenger cars, vans, and heavy trucks. More plentiful than
dashboard indicators are the ingenious vanity, map and convenience lights.
These are all reasons for our corporate commitments to LED's and LED
assemblies."
Recent developments by Agilent and others in the optoelectronics industry
have provided brighter LED's that can be expected to capture half of all
automotive interiors lighting applications over time. LED's (Light Emitting
Diodes) are small, energy-efficient light sources with solid state longevity.
LED life can exceed 100,000 hours. With these combined capabilities to serve
the automotive industry, the synergistic association of Chicago Miniature Lamp
and Agilent Technologies, Inc. puts the right LED in the right package," adds
Mr. Ward.
