May 10, 2001Watkins Glen, NY (May 9, 2001) -- Sports car drivers are so anxious to race at Watkins Glen International, they're turning up days before the event to get into go-karts and compete against track personnel and members of the community in a preview to the Six Hours of The Glen. This year's Three Hours of Go-Karts will be held May 16 at KG Motors Slick Track. Action begins at 5:00 p.m., with the race starting at 6:00 p.m.
Some names you may recognize in the drivers seat are Andy Pilgrim (Cooper City, Fla.), driver of the No. 3 Corvette in this year's Rolex 24 At Daytona, Terry Borcheller (Phoenix, Ariz.), winner of the 2001 Nextel 250 at Homestead-Miami (GT class), Kim Hiskey (Monroe, Wash.), the first female driver to win a Rolex Series race when she took the checkered at the Sun Automotive 200 in Phoenix and Roger Edmondson, President of the Grand American Road Racing Association.
The Three Hours of Go-Karts was held last year for the first time and will see several changes this year. The event will indeed be mini, running only three hours versus the full six. Like this year's Six Hours of The Glen, the race will begin in daylight and end under the lights. And as mentioned, this year teams will have some tough competition, with drivers from both the Grand-Am Cup Street Stock Series and Grand American Rolex Sports Car Series trying their hand on the oval track.
"The Six Hours of The Glen is a traditional and historic event at The Glen and one of the most significant sports car races of the year," said track President Bryan R. Sperber. "The Three Hours of Go-Karts is a chance for fans to compete in an endurance race against their favorite sports car drivers and have a great time as we prepare for the great racing ahead.
The Three Hours of Go-Karts will consist of 10 teams with a minimum of six drivers each and will be required to make at least six driver changes (pit stops) during the event. Activities for the race are scheduled to start with a Drivers Meeting at 5:00 p.m., followed by qualifying. The race will begin at 6:00 p.m. and finish under the lights. The winning team will take home trophies, full weekend admission to the Sports Car Grand Prix, May 18-20, and one free hour of track time at the Slick Track.
Fans are invited to get autographs of and cheer for their favorite drivers, professional or amateur. All sports car drivers will also be available for media interviews previewing the Sports Car Grand Prix weekend at The Glen throughout the event.
