ADVISORY/30 Top Southland Automotive Students Vie for State Auto Skills Championship; Technicians Can Still Write Own Job Ticket in 2001
--Automobile Club of Southern CaliforniaWHAT: The Southland's finest high school auto technology students will diagnose and repair identical 2001 Ford Mustangs at the May 11 state finals of the 2001 Ford/AAA Student Auto Skills Competition. (Northern California has an identical contest the same day.) The team with the highest score will represent California in national finals in Washington D.C. in June. At the national event, students will compete for $10 million in scholarships. The Auto Club and Ford sponsor the Southern California contest as part of an educational outreach to attract more young people to automotive professions. WHY: Trained automotive technicians are among the most sought-after and highly paid professionals in today's job market, but many high schools are reducing or eliminating automotive programs due to lack of funds and/or trained teachers. Demand for qualified technicians to work on today's high-tech computerized cars exceeds supply by about 60,000 annually, with salaries ranging from $35,000-75,000 a year.
