ADVISORY/30 Top Southland Automotive Students Vie for State Auto Skills Championship; Technicians Can Still Write Own Job Ticket in 2001

    --Automobile Club of Southern California

WHAT: The Southland's finest high school auto
technology students will diagnose and repair
identical 2001 Ford Mustangs at the May 11
state finals of the 2001 Ford/AAA Student
Auto Skills Competition. (Northern California has
an identical contest the same day.)

The team with the highest score will represent
California in national finals in Washington D.C. in
June. At the national event, students will compete
for $10 million in scholarships. The Auto Club and
Ford sponsor the Southern California contest as part
of an educational outreach to attract more young
                  people to automotive professions.

WHY: Trained automotive technicians are among the most
sought-after and highly paid professionals in
today's job market, but many high schools are
reducing or eliminating automotive programs due to
lack of funds and/or trained teachers. Demand for
qualified technicians to work on today's high-tech
computerized cars exceeds supply by about 60,000
annually, with salaries ranging from $35,000-75,000
                  a year.

    WHEN: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 11. Awards
presentation will be at 1 p.m.

WHERE: California Speedway, Fontana (I-10 to Cherry Avenue
                  Exit, north 1 mile)
