Indy Car Pioneer Lyn St. James to Continue
Association With Continental Teves And the 'Drive Safer
America!' Campaign Following Retirement From Racing
St. James Will Continue to Offer Safe Driving Tips
INDIANAPOLIS, May 7 Automotive supplier Continental Teves
has joined with the racing community in congratulating Indy Car racing pioneer
and automotive authority Lyn St. James on the completion of her successful
racing career. Although she is retiring from the track, Continental Teves is
pleased that Ms. St. James will continue her role with the "Drive Safer
America!" campaign.
"Lyn has been an inspiration to drivers and fans all over the world," said
William Kozyra, president of Continental Teves N.A. "We are fortunate that
Drive Safer America! will continue to benefit from her expertise in safe
driving techniques."
Drive Safer America! is a national education campaign designed to help
drivers better understand proper techniques for driving safely. Ms. St. James
first partnered with Continental Teves five years ago to promote driving
safety and the proper use of new safety technologies. World renowned as one
of the first women to race in the Indianapolis 500, Ms. St. James believes
that public education is vital to helping consumers gain the full benefit of
the safety tools available to them in today's vehicles.
"As a veteran professional race car driver and a concerned parent, I
strongly support safe driving education both on and off the track," said
Ms. St. James. "I know that both seasoned drivers and beginners will benefit
from learning safer driving techniques and habits, particularly families with
small children. It's important that drivers understand how to use new safety
systems such as anti-lock brakes and practice year round safe driving
techniques. Now that my racing career has concluded, I can focus even more
attention on these critical safety issues."
Ms. St. James, in partnership with Continental Teves, has developed a
series of safe driving techniques and practices that all drivers can apply
year round. She has compiled an extensive list of safety suggestions that are
featured in a free "Drive Safer America!" brochure and also available online
at http://www.drivesaferamerica.org .
"With the end of another school year and summer just around the corner,
parents find themselves spending a lot more time on the road with kids in the
car," says Ms. St. James. "When traveling with children you tend to have a
lot of activity in the car which can detract from your ability to drive
safely."
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA),
motor vehicle crashes remain the leading cause of death for young people
between 6 and 26 years old. And as most vehicle crashes occur within 25 miles
of home, simple everyday trips to the local swimming pool and around town can
be more treacherous than one may think.
"Our message is simple -- as an industry leader in developing automotive
safety technology and expertise, Continental Teves is taking a leadership role
in safe driving," said Kozyra. "We are innovators in safety devices and are
delighted to draw upon the experience of one of the world's leading drivers.
The world's auto makers have invested in superior technology and applied their
expertise to make drivers and families safer. Newer cars and sport utility
vehicles are much safer with advanced systems such as the Electronic Stability
Program anti-lock brakes and traction control."
Continental Teves, headquartered in Frankfurt/Main Germany, is a unit of
Continental AG, Hanover, Germany (http://www.conti-online.com ). The company is a
leading supplier of safety and comfort systems that contribute to driver
safety and peace of mind. Continental Teves' North American headquarters is
