Former National Champion ends winless streak at 25 races

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – In 25 races since returning to the American Speed Association ACDelco Series full time, veteran racer Kevin Cywinski couldn’t capture that eighth career victory. But at Montgomery Motor Speedway, that streak came to an end, as the Wisconsin-veteran collected his first of the 2001 season in the ACTIONLINE 300 in front of a packed grandstands.

The defining moment in the race came when Cywinski, who won $17,230 after starting 19th, was trailing teammate Mike Garvey with 284 laps complete. Cywinski and Garvey made contact entering turn one, bringing out the final of nine caution flags. Cywinski ke pt going as Garvey made contact with the outside wall. Cywinski lost the lead to Miller, but passed him with just five laps to go in a race that saw 16 lead changes among 11 drivers.

“With 20 laps remaining, I had to go for the win,” said Cywinski. “I hated to get into him, but I had to go for the win. I was in the dirt trying to avoid him. It felt good to get the win. It has been a long time. We have had good cars all year long, just couldn’t finish it off.”

Miller’s second place finish was his best of the season, despite only leading the race for a handful of laps near the end.

“It was great leading the race coming off of turn two after that accident,” said Miller. “Had there been five more laps, I might have gotten the win. But I gave him plenty of room because I knew he will repay it in the future.”

Rookie Johnny Sauter and Butch Miller staged a classic battle to the line for the third and final podium position, with Sauter hanging on to take third and Butch Miller, fourth, as the cars were literally locked together with Sauter sliding sideways. Defen ding ASA National Champion Gary St. Amant rounded out the top five.

Pole sitter Greg Edwards finished the event in 12th position. David Stremme, Mike Eddy, Joey Clanton, Garvey and Scott Fraser rounded out the top 10.

The series takes a week off before makings its first ever visit to Concord Motorsport Park on Sunday, May 20 for the BFGoodrich Tires 300. The event is scheduled to go green at 1 p.m. (Eastern).
