Tony Kanaan and his #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard made a
valiant bid to steal the victory in today's Lehigh Valley Grand Prix at
Nazareth Speedway with pit strategy, but it did not have a happy ending
despite his leading 64 laps and recording the fastest lap of the race.
Kanaan ended his streak of seventh-place finishes at the first two events
this season by coming in 16thin a race that was won by rookie Scott Dixon.
Kanaan was running with the leaders on Lap 125 of today's 225-lap event,
moving into the lead from fifth position when the four cars in front of him
pitted during a caution period that started four laps earlier.  The team
elected to stay on the track in first position, which he held until finally
having to stop for fuel under green on Lap 190.  He fell back to 16th, where
he stayed for the final 34 laps of the race.  He recorded the race's fast
lap of 21.170 seconds (an average of 160-869 mph) on Lap 196 around the
1-mile tri-oval.

Kanaan's teammate Alex Zanardi and the #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing
placed 20th today after a frustrating day that ended with gearbox problems
on Lap 176 of the race.  He was several laps down when he pulled into the
pits for the final time, and completed 167 laps on the day.

After a weekend off, the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series resumes with
Round 5 at Twin Ring Motegi in Japan May 17-19.

"The car ran absolutely flawlessly today.  I've got to hand it to the team
for giving me a great race car, and we did our best out there.  But, plain
and simple, we took a gamble and it didn't pay off.  What can you do?
Racing is a risk business, and we were counting on there being a clean race
the rest of the way.  But it didn't pan out, and the people who pitted when
we didn't managed to go all the way to the end.  The way we wrote our
storyline, it wasn't supposed to happen that way.  But that's racing.  We
came back from a rough day of practice on Friday and had the fastest car on
the track today.  So we take that momentum from here to Japan.  I can't wait
to get back in the race car!"
