May 6, 2001MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Virginia’s Greg Edwards shocked everyone but himself on Saturday by capturing the pole for Sunday’s ACTIONLINE 300 at Montgomery Motor Speedway. Edward’s lap of 19.883 sec. (90.530 mph) was his first career pole in only his fourth career ASA event. In three starts in 2000, Edwards started no better than 11th and finished no better than 32nd.
“I’m excited to be on the pole, but I want to finish one of these races,” said Edwards, whose time breaks the track record of one-year ago held by Mike Garvey. “I have to drive smart and stay out of trouble. I knew we had a good car. This is a feather in o ur cap.”
Edwards’ brother, Danny, piloted the same car to a sixth place finish two races ago at South Boston Speedway. Greg Edwards is the 1998 Langley Speedway Track Champion. He was the only car to eclipse the 20-second mark.
Edwards topped the early quick times of Butch Miller and Scott Hansen. Defending ASA National Champion Gary St. Amant was the last to qualify, but ended up with the second fastest time of the day, turning a lap of 20.003 sec. (89.987 mph).
Miller was third (20.012 sec./89.946 mph) with Hansen fourth (20.032 sec./89.856 mph) and Indianapolis, Indiana’s Tim Taylor rounding out the top five (20.045 sec./89.798 mph).
Michigan’s Mike Eddy and Florida’s Mike Cope swapped the lead several times during the running of the 100-lap qualifying race, with the seven-time ASA National Champion, Eddy, coming out on top. Cope finished third after getting passed late by Greg Stewart
. Both David Bonnett (Hueytown, Ala.) and Brad Lemley (Grant, Ala.) made the show and will start the ACTIONLINE 300.
Action begins on Sunday at 9 a.m. (local) with spectator gates opening. The on-track autograph session begins at 10. with pre-race ceremonies beginning at 11:15. The ACTIONLINE 300 is scheduled to take the green at noon.
