May 6, 2001Thompson, CT – Regan Smith set the pace Saturday afternoon to win his first career Sunoco Pole Award when he circled Thompson International Speedway in a time of 20.552 seconds (109.478 mph) Saturday afternoon during qualifying for the Naturally Fresh Foods 200.
Smith, in his second season of USAR Hooters ProCup Series competition, was obviously excited about starting from the point.
“We just put the car on the edge and it held on for us today,” Smith said. “The guys on the crew worked their tales off today to get the car right for me and our crew chief Mark Huff made a good call before qualifying. We are looking for a sponsor and winning a pole and getting up front early will be key. You will need to be patient if you want to be in contention for a win here at Thompson.”
Bill Plemons, Jr. will start on the outside of row one in his Hooters Ford, while Charlie Ford starts third after he won the Sunoco Pole Award at the last Northern Division race at Jennerstown Speedway two weeks ago.
Jason McLellan will start fourth with Brian Vickers completing the top five.
