May 05, 2001Brian Tyler of Parma, Mich. captured his initial USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet Series pole position Friday afternoon at Nazareth (Pa.) Speedway and will lead the 30-car field to the green flag at 3:40 pm (ET) Saturday on the 1-mile paved oval.
Tyler qualified his Kroger/Pringles/Folgers/Sunny Delight machine at 136.425 mph to edge out Eric Gordon of Indianapolis, Ind for the $500 cash Oliver Trucking "Pole Award." Gordon averaged 136.374 mph and will start alongside Tyler on the front row Saturday.
"The first lap was good," Tyler admitted. "I overdrove the second lap and got loose on both ends. I felt we were struggling a bit but we made some changes after the practice sessions and the car was good for qualifying. Tomorrow is a long race (100 miles) but I feel good about it. The key here is to soft pedal off the corners and save the tires."
A 15-mile "qualifying race" at 8 am will precede Saturday's 100-mile race, the third round of the 2001 series. Paul White and Russ Gamester, winners of rounds one and two, met with different fates. Gamester will start eighth in the 100-miler, while White starts alongside Derek Davidson on the front row of the "qualifying race" and must finish in the "top-six" to make the feature.
