Mazda Sales Climb For Eighth Straight Month

       - Company's Sales Still Rising Following Strong First Quarter -

    IRVINE, Calif., May 1 For the eighth consecutive month,
Mazda has posted a sales increase, with the automaker reporting a nearly three
percent increase in sales for the month of April.  The 2.9 percent increase
follows a strong first quarter of the 2001 that saw Mazda sales in the United
States finish the quarter in impressive fashion, surging 23 percent ahead of
last year's pace.

    Overall, Mazda's sales for April are 21,860, and the year-to-date sales
total is 87,621 units.

    "We are satisfied with our sales performance in April, especially in light
of the downturn in overall sales," said Charlie Hughes, president and CEO of
Mazda North American Operations.  "Mazda products are on more and more
consumers' shopping lists, and we are confident that our sales will remain
strong through the remainder of the second quarter with the introduction of
our new 2001 MP3 and 2002 Protege5 models."

    April proved to be an impressive month for Mazda's stylish Millenia, which
saw a nearly 12 percent increase in sales from a year ago.  The 11.8 percent
increase reflects the Millenia's best April since 1995.  Also turning in an
improved performance was the sporty Mazda Protege, which rose 6.3 percent for
the month.
