“Despite improved equipment and better training, law enforcement remains the
deadliest profession in America.”
-- NLEOMF Chairman, Craig W. Floyd
HISTORY:
In 1792 the first law enforcement officer was killed. Since then more than
15,000 officers have lost their lives in the line of duty. In 2000 alone, more
than 150 police officers were killed in the line of duty. On average one police
officer is killed somewhere in our country every 57 hours. There are also
63,000 assaults committed against our officers every year, resulting in more
than 21,000 injuries.
In 1984 the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund was established.
This non-profit organization was established to honor the service and sacrifice
of America’s law enforcement officers. In 1991 the National Law Enforcement
Officers Memorial was built and dedicated to those officers who have lost their
lives serving and protecting throughout the United States.

duty than any other department with 541 deaths.
· Since 1991, California has lost 1,265 officers, more than any other state.
· In 2000, more than 150 officers were killed in the line of duty across the
