Qualifying Notes/Quotes - Saturday, April 28, 2001
Texas Motor Speedway - 1.5-Mile Tri-Oval
Round 3 of 21 on the 2001 CART FedEx Championship Series
Tony Kanaan and the #55 Hollywood/Mo Nunn Racing Honda-Reynard will start
Sunday's Firestone Firehawk 600, Presented by Pioneer, from the outside of
the seventh row. After recording a top-two practice time for the third
session in a row this morning, Kanaan had what he termed a disappointing
qualifying run in the mid-day Texas heat. The 19th of 26 qualifiers to go,
Kanaan turned in a fast lap of 23.142 seconds (an average of 230.542 mph)
over the high-banked 1.5-mile Texas Motor Speedway oval. His car got
slightly loose in Turn 4 of his second of two qualifying laps as he was
searching for more speed. But he had to settle for the 14th on the starting
grid.
Teammate Alex Zanardi and the #66 Pioneer-WorldCom/Mo Nunn Racing
Honda-Reynard will start outside the third row in Sunday's 600-kilometer
main event. Zanardi, the first of 26 qualifiers to go, saw his
23.003-second (231.935 mph) time hold up, good for sixth overall.
Kenny Brack, a former Indy Racing League competitor who is the only driver
in Sunday's field with race experience on the Texas Motor Speedway oval,
earned his second pole of the season today in 22.854 seconds (233.447mph).
Patrick Carpentier, with a time of 22.864 seconds (233.345 mph) joins Brack
on the front row. Oriol Servia qualified fourth at 22.900 seconds (232.978
mph), Bryan Herta was fourth in 22.931 seconds (232.663 mph), and Shinji
Nakano rounds out the top five after a lap of 22.988 seconds (232.086 mph).
The tape-delayed broadcast of today's CART qualifying show will air on ESPN2
at 1 a.m. EDT Sunday. Tomorrow's warm-up show CART2DAY will air at 11 a.m.
EDT on ESPN2. And race time Sunday is set for 2 p.m. CDT. It will be
broadcast live by ESPN at 3 p.m. EDT.
TONY KANAAN
"I got a little too close to the wall on my second lap and had to correct.
It wasn't that big of a deal. It probably looked more dramatic on TV than
it really was. But it still is a disappointment to end up where we are
because we had a very good race car right out of the box again this weekend.
I was just looking for a little extra speed running on my own, and I really
don't know what happened. The good news is that we really do have a great
race car in traffic, so I'm reasonably confident about tomorrow. It's a
long race, as I've been saying all along, and it will be a matter of being
in a good position during the last 50 laps before anyone can think about
going all out for the win. We'll be in good shape."
