Sauter collects third career pole, second of 2001

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Wisconsin’s Johnny Sauter captured the pole for Saturday’s Iowa 300 at Hawkeye Downs Speedway. Sauter, a second generation racer from Wisconsin, will start his A.P. Plasman Group Chevrolet from the pole after his lap o f 18.711 sec. (96.200 mph). Sauter’s performance was no surprise after he was the fastest through the three practice sessions.

“Didn’t change a thing after practice,” said the 22-year-old Sauter. “The last session we put on sticker tires and made a mock run. I knew the car was quick. I thought Gary or Kevin might be able to beat me. Last time I was here, I won in a late model. I don’t know if that is a good omen or not.”

He collected his second career pole at the season opening race of 2001 at St. Augustine Speedway. His first career pole came driving the team car of his brother, former ASA Champion, Tim Sauter, at the Milwaukee Mile last year.

Defending ASA National Champion Gary St. Amant qualified second (18.754 sec./95.980 mph) after trailing Sauter all day in practice. St. Amant credited his team with making the necessary changes to speed his car up.

“We made a lot of good changes on the car all day,” said St. Amant. “We had three different set-ups and finally hit on one we liked. You can’t sit it on your qualifying setup for the race or you will be in trouble.”

Kevin Cywinksi, still looking for his first win since returning to the series in 2000, qualified third with a time of 18.802 sec. (95.737 mph). Three-time defending winner at Hawkeye Downs, Mike Garvey, qualified fourth with a time of 18.883 sec. (95.324 m ph). Fourth-year ASA veteran Greg Stewart turned in his best qualifying effort of the year, coming home fifth (18.902 sec. / 95.278 mph).

Rookie points leader Scott Fraser took the 100-lap qualifying race, leading from start to finish. Mike Eddy made a big charge through the field, but could not quite make the winning pass. Todd Rosebrugh, Dennis Lampman and Tim Jedrzejek rounded out the top five.

Spectator gates open for the Iowa 300 at 10 a.m. The on-track autograph session will begin at noon with driver introductions and pre-race activities starting at 1:15 p.m. The Iowa 300 is set for 2 p.m.
