COLUMBUS, Ind.--April 26, 2001--Today Cummins Inc. announced the election of the Honorable Alexis Herman to the board of directors.
Ms. Herman was appointed the 23rd United States Secretary of Labor by President Clinton in 1997, prior to that, she served for four years as Assistant to the President and Director of the White House Public Liaison Office. In the 1980's Herman was a successful entrepreneur and established her credentials as a labor market expert. At the age of 29, she joined the Carter Administration as the youngest Director of the Women's Bureau in the history of the Labor Department. She currently serves as the Chairperson of the Coca-Cola Company's Employment Diversity Taskforce.

While Secretary of Labor, Herman earned a reputation as an effective negotiator by facilitating a successful conclusion to a strike by United Parcel Service workers. She also signed into law the 1998 Workforce Investment Act, realigning the nations job-training system, increasing employment for adults with disabilities and stepping up programs for disadvantaged youths.
Ms. Herman has been honored by numerous charitable, civic and public policy organizations, including the Sara Lee Foundations' "Frontrunner Award". She was named "One of the 10 Most Fascinating Women in Politics" by George Magazine, and "One of the 50 Smartest Women in the Money Business" by Money Magazine. Last month, Herman received the prestigious "Tribute to a Black American Award" from the National Conference of Black Mayors.
