Exide Technologies Automotive Battery Plant in Spain Receives ISO Certification

Latest European Facility to Be Certified for Voluntary Standard of Excellence

ATLANTA, April 25 The Exide Technologies
facility in Manzanares, Spain is the latest of the company's facilities to
earn the ISO/TS 16949 quality certification. The certification, sanctioned by
the International Organization for Standardization, is a broad-based award
acknowledging superior quality in design, purchasing, production, sales,
marketing and service. Exide Technologies is the global leader in stored
electrical energy solutions.
The Exide facility in Manzanares is part of the company's Transportation
Business Group [TBG], headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia. The TBG manufactures
automotive batteries for original equipment and aftermarket customers
throughout the world. The Manzanares operation is Exide's largest OE plant in
Europe and manufactures batteries principally for Volkswagen AG, Peugeot-PSA
and Renault.
"When Exide acquired GNB Technologies last fall, the Transportation
Business Group established a global integration program. One of the
initiatives is to complete ISO/TS 16949 certification at every one of its
facilities," said Craig Muhlhauser, president and chief operating officer of
Exide Technologies. "The Manzanares certification marks yet another milestone
in our drive toward achieving consistent, measurable excellence in product and
process quality globally."
The ISO/TS 16949 certification, awarded by the International Automotive
Task Force, is a significant upgrade of the ISO/QS 9000 standard. It aligns
existing European and U.S. automotive quality system requirements into a new,
worldwide standard for the global automotive industry. The standard requires
the qualifying facility to have a documentation and registration scheme
acceptable to both European and U.S. standards. The Manzanares facility was
certified with the earlier QS 9000 in February 2000.
"Today, the ISO/TS 16949 standard is voluntary, but it is expected to
become mandatory," said Tom Minner, president of the Exide Technologies
Transportation Business Group. "Achieving the certifications while they still
are voluntary is a mark of our commitment to providing the highest level of
customer service."
ISO certifications are categorized into a broad range of business systems.
A facility becomes ISO certified after independent auditors investigate and
document that its product quality and environmental processes conform to
relevant standards. According to the International Organization for
Standardization, the objective is to give a company's management and its
customers confidence that the organization is in control of its processes.
Other Exide facilities in Europe that have achieved ISO certification this
year are Bad Lauterberg, Buedingen and Weiden, Germany; Horton, Norway; and
Poznan, Poland. The facilities produce stored energy systems for Exide's
network-power, motive-power and transportation divisions.

    Note:
Exide Technologies is the global leader in providing electrical-energy
storage solutions. The company has annualized revenues of approximately
$3 billion and has operations in 89 countries, serving the industrial and
transportation markets.
Industrial applications include network-power batteries for
telecommunications systems, fuel-cell load-leveling, electric utilities,
railroads, photovoltaic (solar-power storage) and other uninterruptible power
supply (UPS) markets; and motive-power batteries for a broad range of
equipment uses, including lift trucks, mining and commercial vehicles.
Transportation uses include automotive, heavy-duty truck, agricultural,
marine and other batteries, as well as new technologies being developed for
hybrid vehicles and new 42-volt automotive applications. The company supplies
both the aftermarket and original-equipment transportation customers.
