Circuit City Announces Executive Retirement

    RICHMOND, Va., April 25 Circuit City Stores, Inc. today
announced that after a career spanning nearly three decades, Richard Birnbaum,
executive vice president of operations, plans to retire next year.
    Birnbaum, 47, joined Circuit City in 1972 as a part-time sales counselor
in Washington, D.C.  He was elected vice president in 1985, president of the
company's central operating division in 1986, senior vice president --
marketing in 1991 and executive vice president -- operations in 1994.
    "Richard has been a guiding force in Circuit City's growth and
development, and his dedication to our company has been nothing short of
extraordinary," said W. Alan McCollough, Circuit City's president and chief
executive officer. "We will miss him, but we respect his decision and we
appreciate his desire to devote more time to his family."
    Beginning in mid-May, Birnbaum plans to work a limited schedule until his
official retirement effective May 1, 2002.
