BLAZIN HOT NASCAR FOOD 4 LESS SUPER LATE MODELS BACK

BLAZIN' HOT NASCAR FOOD 4 LESS SUPER LATE MODELS BACK
SATURDAY APRIL 28 AT IRWINDALE AFTER APRIL 14's "WILD ONE"
… WHO (REALLY) WANTS TO WIN THIS ONE?
ADD: NASCAR Super Stocks, Grand American Modifieds, and King Taco Legend Cars
PLUS: ROUND THREE OF THE MILLER LITE BIG 10 CHALLENGE!

Irwindale, Calif. - - Here they come again, hot off "the night of a thousand yellows" and race cars splattered all over the raceway. The last time that the Food 4 Less Super Late Models took to the Irwindale tarmac it must have been "moon madness" night and strange things happened (involving cars becoming magnetically attracted to each other as well as to the concrete walls around the ½-mile). Luckily only egos and race cars were physically damaged, but unless you were one of the winners (Sean Woodside and David Gilliland, we had "Twin 50" races that strange eve), you might describe the racing as "not very pretty". By racetime, all the wounded cars and battered egos will be patched up with all involved looking forward to a clean, close, competitive 75 laps of hard racing on Saturday, April 28.

Young Nathan Wulff of Escondido stands alone on the top of the leader board going into this week's Food 4 Less feature event. Wulff's sparkling early season performance has been the talk of Speedway. "Rookie of the Year" talk is rampant, but being overall points leader after four races must place him also in contention for overall honors in this tough division.

Likable veteran Charlie Utts from Camarillo comes into the event in second place simply by virtue of his steady performances in all four of the first SLM races so far this early season at IS. His two-person (himself and wife Kristen) team travel light work and hard, and "Chargin' Charlie" has been getting the job done very well indeed of late.

And then there's the 1999 Winston West Champion, Sean Woodside. This Saugus speedster was recently asked whether he would seriously pursue the F4L-SLM points crown at Irwindale this season. His answer, before April 14 when he vaulted into third place in the standings, was sort of non-committal. At this rate, one would think that one might think more seriously about adding yet another championship notch to one's belt.

Also in the running for "Rookie of the Year" honors is last year's NASCAR late Model Champion, James Weston of Goleta. His sharp new driving uniform no longer identifies him as "Bam-Bam", but his fourth place in the standings sure shows that he's got a handle on how these "Supers" work.

Brent Reynolds of Escondido will come to Saturday night's big race fifth in points with Chino's Tim Woods III (just picked by the Roush team to man their fourth Craftsman Truck next season) right on his bumper in sixth.

Simi Valley's Tommy Fry, who had one of his worst on track nights ever on the 14th, and Santa Barbara's Greg Voigt, last year's divisional Champ, occupy tenth and eleventh place on the points board but that situation can change rapidly, and most likely will, when those two proven winners get back on stride.

By the way, and just to make the race that little bit more interesting, it will also count as the third race in the run for Miller Brewing's $15,000 end-of-year points fund in the Miller Lite Big 10 Challenge … Enough pressure for you? Your move.

The popular NASCAR Super Stocks will be back along with the fast-flying NASCAR Grand American Modifieds and the raucous King Taco Legend Cars on Saturday night, April 28. After all that racing, the pits are (as always) open to all the fans for personal autographs and close-up photo ops.

Earlier in the day famed pioneer lady racer (first woman on the West Coast to receive a NASCAR license … we won't mention the year) Hila (Paulson) Sweet will stage her 10th annual "California Racer's Reunion" at Irwindale Speedway. This special event will feature food, door prizes, speeches and honors by and for some of the sports' heroes, and a varied vintage car display.

Beginning at noon and going on until 5pm, this event is a great place for fans of that bygone era to "mix and mingle" with the people who built, raced, crewed, televised, and organized the famed "Jalopy Derby" events in the 40's and 50's in Los Angeles and surroundings. Legendary Indy 500 winners Parnelli Jones and Roger Ward are both scheduled to be on hand at this gala gathering of the faithful. To which may we just add: "Whoa Nellie!" (always wanted to say that!)
