Lear Corporation Employees Unite to Support
10th Annual Komen Detroit Race for the Cure(R)
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., April 20 /PRNewswire Interactive News Release/ -- Lear
Corporation today announced that nearly 100 employees have signed
up to participate in the 10th annual Komen Detroit Race for the Cure(R) on
Saturday, April 21, 2001, at Comerica Park to help raise funds for breast
cancer research, education and testing.
In addition to raising funds to combat the disease, the Race for the Cure
event promotes awareness, education and early detection of breast cancer.
Each year, more than 180,000 women nationwide are diagnosed with breast
cancer.
The Detroit race, which is presented locally by the Barbara Ann Karmanos
Cancer Institute, is part of a national series of 5K runs/walks throughout the
U.S. Last year, more than 29,000 local participants ran or walked the 5K or a
one-miler. The organizers of this year's event are hoping to break the
all-time record with 30,000 entrants.
Among the Lear employees participating in the event are breast cancer
survivors, a nine-month pregnant daughter determined to show support for her
mother who is fighting fourth-stage cancer, and still others who are paying
tribute to loved ones who have lost their battles with the disease.
The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation was established in 1982 by
Nancy Brinker to honor the memory of her sister, Susan G. Komen, who died of
breast cancer at the age of 36.
Since its inception in 1982, the Komen Foundation and its affiliates have
raised $300 million to support breast cancer research, education, screening
and treatment. The Foundation is an international organization with a network
of more than 70,000 volunteers working through more than 100 U.S. and a
growing number of international affiliates and Komen Race for the Cure events.
In addition to funding research, the foundation and its affiliates fund
breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects for
the medically underserved in their communities.
