MAZDA INKS TITLE SPONSORSHIP DEAL WITH JEREMY MCGRATH TO FORM TEAM MAZDA YAMAHA - Mazda and McGrath Join Forces to Create Motocross' Most Dominating Race Team -

In a move to support its "Zoom Zoom" brand positioning, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) has inked a title sponsorship deal with Jeremy McGrath's new independently owned Supercross team. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

As title sponsor of Team Mazda Yamaha, the company figures prominently in McGrath's newly formed team as they support the reigning champion in his quest for an unprecedented eighth Supercross championship. As part of the deal, Mazda will utilize McGrath to help support the launch and the marketing of Mazda's restyled and more powerful 2001 B-Series truck lineup.

"Jeremy McGrath is clearly the most recognized figure in Supercross and motocross racing," said Kristen Simmons director of marketing for Mazda. "His character on and off the track embodies Mazda's brand positioning."

If there is one characteristic that has typified Mazda in its 30-plus years in the U.S. market, it is the company's spirit of creativity and imagination. To remind consumers of this unique Mazda sense of fun and uninhibited joy, Mazda unveiled its new brand campaign, "Zoom Zoom," in June.

McGrath, 28, is considered by many to be the greatest motocross rider of all time. His dominance of the sport has produced seven Supercross championships at the 250cc class, four more than any other rider in history. During his eight-year career racing in the 250cc class, McGrath has won an unprecedented 59% of the races he has entered. Since Mazda began its relationship with McGrath, he has retained his championship status, winning Supercross titles in 1998, 1999 and 2000.

"I am excited that Mazda has partnered with me in this new endeavor," said McGrath. "For a number of years they have proven not only their commitment to me, but to both Supercross and motocross as well. As we enter our first year as an independent team, I plan to wear the Mazda logo with pride and clearly represent the strongest and most successful automotive-motocross sponsorship alive today."

In addition to Mazda's title sponsorship, McGrath announced his continued partnership with Yamaha and will once again be riding the YZ 250. Mazda and Yamaha have shared the winner's circle with the King of Supercross since 1998.

Through their association with Jeremy McGrath and motocross, Mazda has learned that Gen-X compact truck owners place high demands on their vehicles, and Mazda's 2001 B-Series truck line-up is up to the task. Boasting increased engine performance for all three engine choices, the new B-Series line-up is prepared for the active lifestyle of today's truck owners. In addition to increased engine performance, the freshened front-end design, five-point grille, and the addition of new raised-suspension 4x2 Dual Sport models, the B-Series do it all in style.

The 2001 Mazda truck offers new Dual Sport trim, including a monochromatic paint scheme on the grille, front and rear bumpers and fender flares. The B-Series comes equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels on all 4x4 models, raised suspension, fog lights and four-wheel ABS (standard on all models). There are three engine choices with the 2001 B-Series line. The top-of-the-line B4000 is one of the most powerful compact trucks on the market, thanks to a new 207-horsepower, 4.0-liter SOHC V6, which delivers 7 more horsepower than the previous engine. With 238 lb-ft of torque, a standard limited-slip differential, Class III trailer hitch and the only available five-speed automatic transmission in the import-brand compact class, the B4000 boasts a towing capacity of nearly 5,900 lbs -- more than enough to handle a trailer full of motocross bikes or a camper.

MAZDA LAUNCHES 2001 TRIBUTE: "THE SUV WITH THE SOUL OF A SPORTS CAR" - Launch Ad Distinguishes Tribute from Other Truck-Like SUVs -

IRVINE, Calif. - Most sport-utility vehicles are featured in advertisements thick with mud and snow and rocky mountain trails. Mazda North American Operations (MNAO), with its rich heritage of sports cars such as the RX-7 and Miata, breaks from this routine with the launch of the company's all-new 2001 Tribute sport-utility vehicle by positioning it as "the SUV with the soul of a sports car."

The first execution of the Tribute campaign, dubbed "Zoom Zoom Tribute/Family," poses the hypothetical question, "What if an SUV were raised by a family of sports cars?" The answer is the nimble all-new Tribute, which weaves in and out of a pack of Miatas, learning from its sporting siblings by echoing their every move. At the end of the spot, the Tribute veers off onto a dirt road, emphatically highlighting its SUV credentials. The spot is backed by the same rhythmic, world-beat music used in the new "Zoom Zoom Brand/All Children" Mazda brand ad.

"This ad emphasizes that the Tribute is not just another SUV - it is an SUV with the soul of a sports car," said Stephen Odell, MNAO's vice president, marketing and sales. "We are clearly differentiating the Tribute from the rest of the SUV herd. The Tribute is the kind of SUV that could only come from a company like Mazda, with its unique heritage of sports cars and innovative technology."

The "Zoom Zoom Tribute/Family" Tribute launch ad will be preceded by two 15-second pre-launch spots that will serve as bookends during commercial breaks on high-profile primetime network and cable programming. The pre-launch spots break in early August, with the Tribute 30-second ad breaking in late August and running through October.

A Tribute print execution that echoes the television ads will appear in the September and October issues of such publications as Newsweek, People, Time, Money, Men's Journal, Shape and Fast Company.

The all-new Tribute has the hardware to back up the "soul of a sports car" claim, including responsive, fully independent, sport-tuned front strut and multilink rear suspension and sharp responsive steering feel that was inspired by the Miata. The 2001 Tribute is available in three trim levels - DX, LX and ES. There are two engine choices - a 200-horsepower, DOHC, 24-valve, 3.0-liter V6 and a 130-horsepower, DOHC, 16-valve, 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder engine. The Tribute is available with front-wheel drive or with an on-demand Rotary Blade Coupling™ four-wheel-drive system that gives it all-road, all-weather capability.

A HISTORY OF ZOOM: NEW MAZDA BRAND CAMPAIGN DRAWS ON COMPANY'S UNIQUE HERITAGE - "Zoom Zoom" Theme Clarifies and Energizes Mazda Brand Image -

IRVINE, Calif. - If there is one characteristic that has typified Mazda in its 30-plus years in the U.S. market, it is the company's spirit of creativity and imagination. To remind consumers of this unique Mazda sense of fun and uninhibited joy, Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today unveiled its new brand campaign, "Zoom Zoom."

The first execution, a high-spirited, emotionally uplifting 60-second television commercial, captures the irrepressible spirit of Mazda. It reminds consumers that only Mazda is innovative enough to make cars that embody freedom, imagination and excitement - cars like the rotary-powered RX-7 sports car and Miata roadster. This new commercial captures the sheer exhilaration and liberation that come from experiencing motion and clearly defines Mazda as the only brand to deliver the uninhibited fun we first experienced as children.

"Mazda has always been different from the more run-of-the-mill car companies: more expressive, more innovative, more emotional," said Stephen Odell, MNAO's vice president, marketing and sales. "'Zoom Zoom' is a completely new creative direction that sums up how consumers feel about Mazda - the one thing that defines Mazda and connects us to our buyers. 'Zoom Zoom' is about the imaginative, unbridled joy of children at play. It isn't about speed or driving, it's about engaging the world around us and remembering how to have fun."

The new brand campaign is the result of the largest consumer insight study ever conducted by Mazda. "We conducted this research to understand qualitatively what consumers think of the Mazda brand," said Odell. "For consumers, 'Zoom Zoom' describes Mazda."

Created by Doner of Southfield, Mich., "Zoom Zoom Brand/All Children" features images of children in the exuberant joy of play (riding a bicycle, driving a soapbox racer and pedal car); adults who never lost the spark (spinning in the barber chair, gliding across the office in a desk chair, riding the shopping cart out to the parking lot), and people connecting with the sensory driving experience that is uniquely Mazda.

Accompanied by rhythmic world-beat music, also appropriately titled "Zoom Zoom," the spot also features the legendary RX-7 and playful Miata and briefly previews the all-new Tribute sport utility vehicle, which stays true to Mazda's sporty heritage. Visuals, rather than voiceover, draw viewers in, delivering the compelling "Zoom Zoom Brand/All Children" message: "All children know it. Some adults remember it. One car company refuses to outgrow it. It began with RX-7. Then came Miata. This summer the story continues."

The initial flight of the "Zoom Zoom Brand/All Children" television spot will debut nationally June 12, running for two weeks during high-profile prime time programming, on both network and cable television. The spot will air again in the fourth quarter after the Tribute launch.

Doner is a privately held advertising agency with annual billings of $1 billion. The agency includes nine U.S. and three Canadian offices, as well as an international network headquartered in London. It recently established an office near MNAO headquarters in Irvine, Calif.

MAZDA INTRODUCES MID-YEAR MIATA SPECIAL-EDITION - Limited-Production 2000 Model Includes Numerous Exclusive Features -

CHICAGO - The Mazda Miata roadster is such a special automobile that it is hard to imagine making it better. But Mazda has gone and done just that with its new mid-year Miata Special-Edition. Destined for only 3,000 lucky Miata enthusiasts, the limited-production version of the popular roadster is equipped with a host of features not available on any other 2000 Miata.

- Slick-Shifting Six-Speed Transmission - The limited-production six-speed transmission has close gear spacing for brisk acceleration yet it also provides quieter, more relaxed highway cruising. With one of the shortest and slickest shifters in the industry, shifting up and down through the Miata's gears is one of life's great driving pleasures. The 2000 Mazda Miata Special-Edition also includes a Torsen® limited-slip differential.

- Wood, Leather and Chrome Interior Appointments - Other features include rich Mahogany Mica paint, parchment convertible top, parchment leather-trimmed seats and interior appointments, mahogany-colored NARDI® wood-rimmed steering wheel, shift knob and handbrake lever, white gauge faces, chrome accent rings on the gauges, chrome interior door handles, stainless steel scuff plates and polished 15-inch alloy wheels. The 2000 Mazda Miata Special-Edition also includes a 200-watt BOSE® AM/FM/CD/cassette audio system.

- Optional Equipment - Fog lights, an aerodynamic appearance package (front air dam, side sills and rear mud guards), detachable hardtop and ABS brakes are available as options. The 2000 Mazda Miata Special-Edition goes on sale in Mazda dealerships nationwide this spring. Previous limited-production Miata models have sold out in as little as 90 days.

- Razor-Sharp Handling - Like all 2000 Miata roadsters, the Special-Edition is powered by a 140-horsepower, 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine. The Miata's razor-sharp handling is the result of its rigid chassis, innovative Power Plant Frame and four-wheel double-wishbone suspension. Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes are also standard on the Miata. MAZDA NEXTOURER CONCEPT MAKES NORTH AMERICAN DEBUT -- Touring Sedan of the Future Combines Luxury with Versatility --

CHICAGO - Some vehicles defy easy classification. Mazda's NEXTOURER concept vehicle is one such example. It has the style, luxury appointments and high-tech features of a luxury touring sedan, yet it also possesses the versatility and functionality of a sport-utility vehicle. Mazda calls the NEXTOURER concept a "next-generation touring sedan."

- Sedan Luxury, SUV Versatility - The NEXTOURER embodies Mazda's "Stylish, Spirited and Insightful" brand characteristics in a vehicle that cuts across several conventional categories. Like a touring sedan, the NEXTOURER provides a sense of style and luxury with responsive performance and exceptional dynamic balance. Like a sport utility vehicle, it offers a sense of adventure combined with a spacious, versatile interior layout.

- "Contrast in Harmony" Design - The styling of the NEXTOURER is in line with Mazda's "Contrast in Harmony" design direction seen in the 2000 MPV minivan and 2001 Tribute SUV. Distinctively shaped high-intensity discharge headlights flank Mazda's signature five-point grille with its large chrome "winged M" emblem. The lines of the hood flow back to muscular shoulders and a taut greenhouse. Strong wheel arches provide a sense of balance and stability. At the rear, the shape of a unique Dual-Mode liftgate echoes the five-point grille. Large taillight clusters complete the shoulder line.

- Clean Instrument Panel Design - The luxurious interior has a spacious and open feel, due in part to the centralized instrument cluster. The only control directly in front of the driver is the steering wheel - all of the gauges, control switches and seven-inch pop-up multi-function display have been moved to the center of the instrument panel. The center console even has space to store a laptop computer. There are no air vents in the instrument panel. Instead, the multi-zone air-conditioner has a compact main heat-pump unit and distributes air through vents located in the roof (for cold air) and at floor level (for heated air). This provides superior temperature balance, which is aided by left/right temperature controls and individual fan-speed settings for each passenger.

- Rear Seat Amenities - The rear seats are equally spacious and luxurious. There is a six-inch display in the center console, which allows the rear seat passengers to access the Internet, read e-mail or watch television. Indirect lighting in the roof, doors and instrument panel adds to the luxury feel.

- Dual-Mode Liftgate - The cargo area is key to the NEXTOURER's versatility. In normal use, a Flexible Package Board covers the cargo area behind the rear seats, isolating the passenger compartment from the 14.1 cubic foot cargo area. If more space is needed, each rear seatback can be folded forward independently, and the entire rear seat may be double folded to create a large 35.2 cubic feet of space. Access to the cargo area is through the NEXTOURER's Dual-Mode liftgate. For smaller items, the lower half of the Dual-Mode liftgate can be opened like the trunk of a conventional sedan, while larger items may be loaded by opening the entire liftgate.

- Sophisticated 3.0-Liter DOHC V6 S-VT Engine - A responsive 3.0-liter DOHC V6 engine with Sequential Valve Timing (S-VT) powers the NEXTOURER. The S-VT system enhances both power and low- to mid-range torque. This sophisticated engine is mated to a highly advanced Toroidal Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). This efficient, lightweight and compact next-generation transmission delivers superb response, quiet operation and excellent fuel economy. In fact, when paired with the 3.0-liter engine, the Toroidal CVT delivers 20 percent better fuel economy compared with a conventional automatic transmission.

- Innovative Toroidal Transmission - The innovative design of the Toroidal CVT uses a semi-circular disc pressed against a power roller with an exclusive traction oil between them. Changing the effective radius of the contact point changes the gear ratio, resulting in stepless shifting. The Toroidal VT also uses a geared-neutral starting system, which operates like a conventional planetary gear automatic transmission at low speeds, allowing superior low-speed performance. computer controls the switch between the geared-neutral system and the Toroidal CVT.

- Formula One-Type Shifting - The Toroidal CVT in the NEXTOURER offers a choice of manual or automatic shifting. In manual mode, shifts are made using the wing shift controls mounted behind the steering wheel (similar to the paddle shifters used on Formula One racecars). The wing shift selectors allow the driver to make quick fingertip shifts without removing his or her hands from the steering wheel.

- Advanced Chassis Technologies - The suspension is a multi-link design, both front and rear. The four-wheel disc brake system features dynamic stability control and electronic brake force distribution for added security under all road and load conditions. Run-flat tires are mounted on the stylish, satin-finish 19-inch alloy wheels, eliminating the need for a heavy and bulky spare tire. A low-pressure warning system alerts the driver in the event of a leak or puncture.

- Intelligent Transport System - The NEXTOURER employs a number of advanced technologies, including a driver ID card that activates the starter switch and moves the six-way power driver's seat to the driver's pre-set position. In addition, an Intelligent Transport System (ITS) uses sensors mounted in the vehicle and a navigation system to alert the driver if the vehicle strays out of its lane, approaches a corner too fast or if there is another vehicle in the driver's blind spot.

- Active Ride Height Control - The NEXTOURER features an Active Height Control that lowers the vehicle when it is stopped for ease of entry, raises it nearly four inches at low speeds, then lowers it by two inches at highway speeds for improved handling and fuel economy. An Intelligent Lamp System keeps the angle of the headlight beams at the proper level, regardless of vehicle load, and automatically adjusts the beams as the vehicle approaches a corner, based on input from the navigation system. MAZDA UNVEILS MIATA ENDURANCE RACER CONCEPT -- "Mono-Posto" is an Extreme Expression of Miata's "Oneness Between Horse and Rider" Concept --

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today unveiled the Mazda Miata Mono-Posto Concept at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show. A one-off, one-seater throwback to fifties sports racers, the Miata Mono-Posto was inspired by Jaguar D-type and Lotus 11 endurance racers. The Miata Mono-Posto is an extreme expression of the Miata concept, "oneness between horse and rider," with no concessions made to practicality. The Miata Mono-Posto is the first concept based on the second-generation Miata, introduced in 1998 as a 1999 model, and the fourth Miata concept overall. Other concepts have included the 1989 Club Racer, the 1995 M-Speedster and the 1996 M-Coupe. The Miata Mono-Posto sports custom bodywork, including half doors, air intake in the hood, one-piece valence front and rear fascias, cowl-mounted rearview mirror, a minimalist windscreen and aluminum rollbar. Only the headlights, taillights and rear decklid are stock. The paint finish is a custom Red Pearl Mica.

Modifications include an HKS turbocharger and intercooler, HKS intake and exhaust manifolds and an HKS stainless steel exhaust, which result in a 36-percent increase in horsepower (to 190 hp @ 6100 rpm) and a 104-percent boost in torque (to 243 lb-ft @ 4100 rpm). Other performance modifications include Racing Hart three-piece, five-spoke, 18-inch wheels (18x8 inch front and 18x9.5 inch rear), Baer Racing four-wheel disc brakes and HKS Hiper Damper Coil Over Suspension. The Miata Mono-Posto's purposeful interior features a Formula One-style Sparco® steering wheel, Sparco® lightweight, one-piece racing seat and custom gauges. "The Miata Mono-Posto is for one who wants to be alone with the road, focused purely on driving," said Tom Matano, Mazda Motor Corporation's executive designer in charge of global advanced design based in Hiroshima, Japan. "The idea of this concept was to take the fun of driving a Miata to the extreme." A SEMA member for 13 years, HKS U.S.A. Inc. of Carson, Calif. assisted MNAO's R&D center in Irvine, Calif. in building the Miata Mono-Posto Concept. The Miata Mono-Posto also communicates Mazda's commitment to Miata endurance racing. Mazda is a sponsor of the annual Miata 4-hour endurance race at the Tsukuba Circuit near Tokyo, which includes Japanese automotive media teams, U.S. and European automotive media teams, the Roadster (Miata) Owners Club of Japan (RCOJ), and Team Mazda.

Since it was introduced a decade ago, the Miata has built an impressive racing heritage. Mazda's legendary sports car has dominated Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) Showroom Stock racing. In fact, some observers refer to Showroom Stock B as "Spec Miata" in recognition of this winning tradition. In fact, in this year's SCCA National Championship Showroom Stock B class, Mazda Miatas occupied the top three positions, and captured seven of the top 10 positions. With more than 500,000 units sold worldwide since its introduction, the Miata is now the best-selling two-seat roadster in automotive history. The world's favorite sports car also boasts the largest single marquee car club in the United States, the 30,000-member Miata Club of America. Sold in more than 50 countries, the Mazda MX-5 Miata is an automotive icon responsible for the roadster renaissance. HKS U.S.A. Inc., a Carson, California-based corporation, is widely recognized as a leading manufacturer and distributor of precision HKS-brand, high-performance aftermarket automobile parts and accessories. Established in 1982, HKS U.S.A. Inc. is a wholly owned subsidiary of HKS Company, Ltd. Japan and distributes its products through its worldwide dealer network. MAZDA PROTEGÉ CONCEPT DEBUTS AT SEMA SHOW -- Protegé Offers Alternative to Individuals Who Reject the Herd Mentality --

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) today unveiled the Mazda Protegé Street 2000 Concept, a continuation of the popular Protegé StreetCar Concept that appeared at several auto shows on the 1998-1999 circuit. While last year's concept demonstrated how a showroom stock Mazda Protegé could be customized with a "pro street" look using off-the-shelf aftermarket appearance parts, the one-off Protegé Street 2000 Concept goes a step further by adding "go" to the "show." Modifications to the Protegé Street 2000 Concept include an HKS turbocharger and intercooler, HKS intake and exhaust manifolds and an HKS stainless steel exhaust, which result in a 41-percent increase in horsepower (to 172 hp) and a 87-percent boost in torque (to 225 lb-ft). Other performance modifications include a lowered suspension, Racing Hart 18-inch, five-spoke wheels and four-wheel disc brakes with Brembo® components. The Protegé Street 2000 Concept sports a custom full body kit, including one-piece valence front and rear fascias, fender and side sill extensions and a rear wing. The paint finish is a custom Red Pearl Mica.

The interior trim is finished in a custom two-tone treatment, with Sparco® lightweight, one-piece racing seats, alloy driving pedal set, short gear shift and custom Kenwood® audio system. "We think this car will appeal to the young enthusiast driver," said Jack Stavana, MNAO's group manager, product marketing plans. "Its aggressive appearance captures Mazda's legendary performance spirit, and we are confident that the exposure the Protegé Street 2000 Concept receives at the SEMA show will result in both increased interest and sales of the Protegé." A SEMA member for 13 years, HKS U.S.A. Inc. of Carson, Calif. assisted MNAO's R&D center in Irvine, Calif. in building the Protegé Street 2000 Concept. As the performance import craze grows, it becomes more difficult to stand out in a crowd filled with variations of the same old model. The Mazda Protegé offers an alternative for individuals who reject the herd mentality of driving a "me-too" car. Right out of the box, the stylish Protegé has what it takes to break away from the 'civic' masses of the competition. The Mazda Protegé is an ideal choice for tuners, with its 1.6-liter, 105 horsepower, DOHC, 16-valve, four-cylinder engine in DX and LX models, and the 1.8-liter, 122 horsepower, DOHC, 16-valve 4-cylinder engine in the ES model.

With its race-proven MacPherson independent front suspension and Mazda's patented Twin-Trapezoidal Link (TTL) rear suspension, the Protegé is perfectly suited to handle everything from SCCA road racing and autocrossing to a favorite driving road. All models feature standard front and rear stabilizer bars, reducing body roll during cornering. The Protegé rolls only two degrees in moderately hard (0.5g) cornering-a level of roll resistance normally found in sports cars. Hailed by a leading consumer magazine as the top-rated car in its class, the Mazda Protegé offers exceptional value, so there will be money left over for customizing. The base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the DX model is $11,970. Although it is the least expensive model, the Protegé DX offers all the quality found in the Protegé ES and is well-equipped with power steering, a tilt steering column, and 60/40 split rear fold-down seats. A Convenience Package adds air-conditioning and an AM/FM/CD audio system. The LX model adds cruise control, power windows, door locks and mirrors, tachometer, adjustable driver's seat height and cushion tilt and AM/FM/CD audio system. A Comfort Package adds air-conditioning and floor mats, while the LX Premium Package adds a power glass moonroof, ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution, driver's and passenger's side air bags and keyless entry. The Protegé LX has a base MSRP of $13,245. The Protegé ES, with its 122 horsepower 1.8-liter engine comes with air-conditioning, 15-inch alloy wheels and keyless entry as standard equipment. The ES Premium Package adds a power moonroof, ABS with Electronic Brake Force Distribution, driver's and passenger's side air bags and floor mats. The Protegé ES has a base MSRP of $15,040.

MAZDA EXCELS AT SCCA RUNOFFS -- More Mazda Vehicles Participate Than Any Other Import Brand -

IRVINE, Calif. - There are no guarantees in racing, but it appears that one factor helping many amateur racers get to this year's Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) National Championship, better known as the Runoffs, was driving a Mazda or Mazda-powered car. Of the 580 vehicles participating in the event, roughly one in six, were Mazdas or vehicles powered by a Mazda engine. The 93 vehicles made Mazda the best-represented import-brand manufacturer, easily eclipsing the next most populous import brand (Nissan, at 51 entries). Mazda vehicles competed in 10 of the 24 classes contested at the Runoffs. Mazda scored class wins in Showroom Stock B, C Sports Racing and Formula Star Mazda, backing those results up with podium (first-, second- or third-place) in E Production, GT3 and GT5 classes. "We are very proud of the showing by Mazda vehicles at the Runoffs," said Richard Beattie, president and CEO of Mazda North American Operations. "Racing has played a significant role in Mazda's history, and our performance on the track speaks to the 'Spirited' part of Mazda's 'Stylish, Spirited and Insightful' brand character." In Showroom Stock B, Mazda Miatas occupied the top three positions, and captured seven of the top 10 positions. This is typical of the dominance that Mazda's legendary sports car has held in SCCA Showroom Stock racing since it was introduced a decade ago. In fact, some observers refer to Showroom Stock B as "Spec Miata" in recognition of this winning tradition.

At this year's runoffs, David Daughtery of Noblesville, Ind., took the victory in a rain-shortened race, edging out Eric Morehouse of Fountain Valley, Calif., and Bob Schader of Louisville, Colo. Thirty-one of the 45 cars that took the green flag at the start of the race were Miatas. In C Sports Racing, Mazda-powered Beasley B-2 racers took first and third positions. Ben Beasley of Mentor, Ohio, captured first place, while Matias Bonnier of New Albany, Ohio finished third. The Beasley B-2 is powered by Mazda's unique 13B rotary engine. The compact size of the 13B, coupled with its incredible durability and high power output, makes it ideal for streamlined sports racers. The 13B is related to the four-rotor engine that powered the Mazda 787B sports prototype to victory in the 1991 running of the 24-Hours of LeMans, making Mazda the only Japanese manufacturer to ever win this grueling endurance race. It would be next to impossible for a Mazda-powered vehicle not to win the Formula Star Mazda event, as all 19 starters were powered by Mazda rotary engines. Keith Roberts of LaGrange, Ga., was first to the checkered flag, followed by Matthew Beardsley of Breckenridge, Colo., who set fastest lap of the race in his effort to chase down Roberts. Mickey Gilbert of Golden, Colo., placed third. Formula Star Mazda uses open-wheeled chassis powered by Mazda's 13B rotary engine to deliver exciting, highly competitive racing. Mazda has a long and successful history in motorsports, including its victory in the 1991 edition of the 24-Hours of LeMans. The Mazda RX-7 is the most successful model in International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) history, with more than 100 victories and numerous manufacturers' championships. Since its introduction in 1989, the Mazda Miata has dominated SCCA Showroom Stock racing, first in Showroom Stock C and, more recently, in Showroom Stock B. back to top

2000 MAZDA B-SERIES TRUCKS OFFER MORE EQUIPMENT -- Simplified Lineup Takes on the Competition --

IRVINE, Calif. - When it comes to compact pickup trucks, more equipment is better. This is true of Mazda's rugged B-Series truck line for 2000. Mazda has added more equipment to the B-Series lineup from top to bottom. The 2000 Mazda B-Series is available in three cab configurations - regular cab, two-door extended Cab Plus and four-door extended Cab Plus 4. There are three trim levels - economical SX, upgraded SE and the "take-no-prisoners" extreme look of the Troy Lee Edition. Three models are available, from the four-cylinder B2500 to the V6-powered B3000 to the high-torque V6-powered B4000. Buyers of V6 models also can choose between two-wheel drive and four-wheel drive. In all, there are 13 B-Series models to choose from. Among the changes for 2000, larger P225/70R15 tires are now standard on all SX models, air conditioning and floor mats are standard on all SE and Troy Lee Edition models, fog lights are standard on all 4x4 models, a heavy-duty payload package is standard on B3000 and B4000 Cab Plus models and a 6,000-pound trailer hitch is standard on B4000 4x4 models. The B2500 models are powered by a 119-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, mated to either a five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic transmission. When equipped with returnless fuel system and automatic transmission, the B2500 models qualify as Low Emission Vehicles.

The B3000 is powered by a 143-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 engine and can be mated to a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. The B3000 is a Flexible Fuel Vehicle (FFV), capable of using either regular unleaded gasoline or E85 (85% ethanol, 15% gasoline). The Mazda B3000 is the first FFV import-brand pickup in the United States. B4000 models feature a 160-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 with 220 foot-pounds of trailer-towing, cargo-hauling torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard on the B4000 4x2 and optional on the B4000 4x4. The Mazda B4000 4x4 boasts class-leading features, including the only five-speed automatic transmission in the segment, and a pulse vacuum hub-lock (PVH) front axle system. PVH is an industry-leading technology providing true shift-on-the-fly capability at any legal speed and any temperature, without noise and engagement delays. Best of all, there is no need to stop or back up to release the hubs. SE models feature an AM/FM/CD audio system, air conditioning, chrome grille, alloy wheels and floor mats. An anti-theft system is standard on V6-powered SE models. The Mazda B3000 Troy Lee Edition offers the aggressive "take no prisoners" look and ground clearance of four-wheel drive in a 4x2. With a raised suspension, fog lights, fender flares, 16-inch wheels designed by Troy Lee and extra large tires, the Troy Lee Edition B3000 handles rough terrain like a motocross bike. Troy Lee is a leading-edge graphic designer with a passion for extreme sports. His company, Troy Lee Designsâ, has created painted helmets, speed equipment, and other apparel for extreme-sports enthusiasts for more than 17 years.

Troy Lee Edition models feature optional reflective body-side flame graphics, "Dual Sport" tailgate logo and the Troy Lee Designsâ signature logo on the exterior, gray two-tone seats with silver accent piping, leather-wrapped steering wheel, gray two-tone door panels with a monogrammed Troy Lee Designsâ signature logo and carbon fiber-look trim on the instrument panel and door panels. For those enthusiasts who get the urge to leave the road for rugged terrain or rocky backcountry in style, there is the top-of-the-line, Mazda B4000 Troy Lee Edition Cab Plus 4 4x4. This model receives leather seats, four-wheel drive, skid plates, custom 16-inch wheels, fog lights, and a trailer hitch with 6,000 lbs. of towing capacity (A/T) -- more than the competition. All B-Series trucks feature an independent, double-wishbone front suspension and a live-axle rear suspension with leaf springs. A front stabilizer bar is standard on all models. 4x4 and Troy Lee models also receive a rear stabilizer bar. Steering is power-assisted rack-and-pinion, and the brakes are front ventilated discs and rear drums. Four-wheel ABS brakes are available on B4000 4x4 models. Dual de-powered air bags are standard on all B-Series trucks. Mazda also was the first import-brand truck to offer a key-operated passenger-side air bag deactivation switch, which allows the driver to disconnect the air bag when transporting children.

Mazda has become a force in motocross racing, with its sponsorship of the AMA/Mazda Truck Motocross Nationals and Mazda/Chaparral Racing, featuring superstar rider Jeremy McGrath. Troy Lee Edition B-Series trucks help punctuate the aggressive statement Mazda is making in motocross racing. The B-Series' tough truck credentials make it "the official truck of the motocross adrenaline seeker." Like every 2000 Mazda model, the B-Series comes with a three-year roadside assistance program. With a call to a toll-free number, B-Series owners can access roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the United States and Canada. The 2000 Mazda B-Series is covered by a comprehensive three-year/50,000-mile warranty that covers every part on the vehicle except those subject to normal wear. In addition, the B-Series is covered by a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty. MAZDA INTRODUCES A SMARTER MINIVAN -- 2000 Mazda MPV has Smart Design, Smart Features and Smart Size --

IRVINE, Calif. - The all-new 2000 Mazda MPV minivan combines smart style, smart features and smart size - redefining what buyers have come to expect from this segment. "The MPV is the first minivan that delivers both distinctive design and innovative functionality," said Martin Leach, managing director of product planning and design in Hiroshima, Japan. "We think the MPV is 'smarter' than other minivans because of features like insightful design, class-leading seating versatility and dual sliding doors with power windows. And since we're not in the business of building big buses, we think customers will find it smart-sized as well." With styling that gets noticed, the Mazda MPV expresses a sporty personality and youthful individuality. The short front overhang, slanted D-pillars and liftgate convey the MPV's sportiness, while sculpted body sides create a stylish silhouette. The five-point chrome grille, multi-reflector headlamps and aluminum-vaporized rear combination lamps add to the MPV's sophisticated style. The dramatic exterior styling also carries over to the interior, highlighted by a stylish V-shaped instrument panel, integrated center console, chrome accents and sculpted trim elements. Additionally, the spacious, refined cabin uses high-quality materials with exceptional fit and finish.

Styled with input from all four Mazda R&D centers - Irvine, Calif., Frankfurt, Germany, and Yokohama and Hiroshima, Japan, the new MPV follows Mazda's new "Contrast in Harmony" corporate design philosophy which blends contrasting design elements such as soft and sharp, light and shadow and static and dynamic. For example, creases run across the curved hood and bold fender flares create a wide profile and contrast with sharp contours and a character line. With the all-new MPV, Mazda introduces the first dual sliding doors with power windows in its class. Compared with other minivans' sliding doors, the MPV's doors can be opened and closed more easily and quietly, even by small children. In addition, the sliding door tracks are hidden in the window channels for a clean, smart look. Other smart features include "Side-by-Slide" removable second-row seats (LX and ES models) that offer the advantages of both captain's chairs and a bench seat by moving fore/aft and side to side while seated, not possible in other minivans. Each Side-by-Slide seat reclines, flips forward, weighs just 37 pounds and is individually removable in a few easy steps. The Tumble-Under third-row seat folds flat into the floor in seconds, and has an innovative tailgate feature that allows the seat to be flipped rearward when the liftgate is open, perfect for family picnics or tailgate parties. The 2000 Mazda MPV is "smart-sized," challenging the bigger-is-better trend that has seen some minivans approach the size of full-size passenger vans. Its short front overhang, expansive glass area and compact turning circle provide optimum road visibility and maneuverability, making the MPV easy to drive and park.

Mazda's award-winning OptiSpace design philosophy results in clever interior design and packaging, optimizing interior space and providing a feeling of spaciousness within the cabin. An example of OptiSpace is the center console that narrows beneath the instrument panel to provide more foot room for the driver and front-seat passenger. For front seat occupants there are up to nine convenient, built-in storage compartments, including an overhead console, large-capacity glove box, storage tray under the front passenger's seat (except DX), front door pockets, a coin box and a large storage box that holds up to 12 compact discs. The center console houses dual adjustable cup holders that hold everything from juice boxes to super-sized cups. Second-row passengers also enjoy a number of drink holders. The second-row seat has a pull-out dual cup holder, while a holder for plastic drink bottles is located in the trim panel of each sliding door. On LX and ES models, the front passenger's seat includes a large seatback pocket. The cup holders and storage compartments do not stop at the second-row seats. There are four more cup holders in the third row, with dual cup holders in each side of the rear quarter panel trim. Additionally, a covered storage compartment is integrated into the armrest on the left side quarter panel trim. The rear quarter panel trim also includes a 12-volt auxiliary power port for using electronic accessories both inside and outside the vehicle.

Behind the third-row seat, the deep well in the floor provides a generous 17.2 cubic feet of cargo space and keeps cargo from sliding around while driving. When the third-row seat is folded into the floor, cargo space is 54.6 cubic feet (53.7 with rear A/C). For runs to the home improvement warehouse, folding the third-row seat and removing the second-row seats yields an impressive 127 cubic feet in cargo capacity. The climate control system and audio system controls are integrated in the center of the instrument panel. The climate control system includes a micron air filter and optional rear air-conditioning and heating with individual climate controls for front and rear passengers. The second- and third-row passengers are cooled by vents in the ceiling and warmed by ducts in the floor. Separate vents for each passenger ensure that air-conditioning performance in the rear is every bit as good as the front. With the optional "In-dash Jukebox" six-disc CD changer with a 180-watt, nine-speaker Super Sound system, the new MPV boasts one of the best audio systems ever put in a minivan. An AM/FM/CD audio system with 100 watts of power and a four-speaker sound system is standard. Driver and front passenger supplemental restraint system (SRS) de-powered air bags are standard equipment on all models. Additionally, optional SRS side air bags, located in the outer seatback bolsters, protect front seat passengers in the event of a side impact.

For a rewarding driving experience, the MPV features a new all-aluminum, low maintenance 2.5-liter, DOHC, 24-valve V6 engine with 170-horsepower and 165 lbs-ft of torque. A variable air intake system allows this smooth, sophisticated engine to deliver exceptional low- and mid-range torque. In California, the new MPV achieves Low Emission Vehicle (LEV) status. A durable, smooth-shifting four-speed electronically controlled automatic transaxle is standard. Fuel economy is 18 mpg city, 23 mpg highway. The new MPV provides the optimum combination of spirited handling, rock-solid stability and ride comfort using an ideal diagonal roll axis, MacPherson strut independent front suspension and torsion beam axle rear suspension. The rigid rear suspension effectively minimizes camber and toe changes, providing a stable ride even when the vehicle is loaded. It is also compact and lightweight, enabling a low floor, which maximizes cabin space. Additionally, engine-speed-sensing power rack-and-pinion steering provides quick, responsive handling. The steering wheel core is magnesium for reduced weight and improved handling stability. The new MPV features 10.8-inch front ventilated discs and 10-inch drum brakes in the rear. The optional four-wheel anti-lock braking system (ABS) includes an electronic brake force distribution (EBFD) system that modifies the braking force of the rear brakes depending on vehicle load, road conditions and vehicle speed for shorter stopping distances when fully loaded with passengers and cargo. To enhance the MPV's sporty appearance, five-spoke 15-inch aluminum alloy wheels are optionally available on DX and LX models. Six-spoke 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels are available as an option on LX models and are standard on ES models.

Mazda even put the spare tire in a smart place by stowing it curbside, underneath the vehicle rather than inside. Unique among minivans, the MPV's spare can be removed without unloading passengers or cargo. Mazda offers customers a choice of three trim levels on the new MPV: DX, LX and ES. The least expensive DX model is well equipped and includes standard features like a 2.5-liter DOHC V6, four-speed automatic transmission, front stabilizer bar, power steering, front air conditioning, a four-speaker AM/FM/CD audio system and tilt steering column. The LX model adds power front and rear windows and door locks, heated power mirrors, and privacy glass. The top-of-the-line ES model adds the following standard features: an ignition immobilizer system, alarm, keyless remote entry system, leather seating surfaces, leather-wrapped steering wheel, wood grain interior trim, 16-inch aluminum alloy wheels, premium nine-speaker sound system and front side airbags. Options include a DX power package, an LX security package, an LX touring package, a Four Seasons package and a GFX appearance package. The optional GFX package includes fog lights, front and rear spoilers and aerodynamic side sills. A power glass moonroof is a stand-alone option. Like every 2000 Mazda model, the MPV comes with a three-year roadside assistance program. With a call to a toll-free number, MPV owners can access roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the United States and Canada.

The 2000 Mazda MPV is covered by a comprehensive three-year/50,000-mile warranty that covers every part on the vehicle except those subject to normal wear. In addition, the MPV is covered by a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty. MAZDA CELEBRATES MILLENNIUM WITH SPECIAL MILLENIA MODEL -- 2000 Millennium Edition Millenia Dubbed the "Official Car of the Millennium" --

IRVINE, Calif. - While many cars can lay claim to "Car of the Year" or "Car of the Century" titles, only one can rightfully claim to be the "Official Car of the Millennium." That car, of course, is the aptly named 2000 Mazda Millenia Millennium Edition. This special, limited-production model goes on sale this fall and includes several unique features not seen before on Mazda's flagship luxury sedan. The limited-production Millennium Edition is available in two exclusive colors - Highlight Silver and Millennium Red - and features 17-inch chrome alloy wheels, charcoal-colored synthetic suede seat and door trim, revised wood grain trim panels, six-disc in-dash CD changer, leather-wrapped A/T shift lever and handbrake lever, special Millennium Edition badging on the C-pillars and logos on the door panels and scuff plates. The result is a stylish, exclusive vehicle that only comes around once in a thousand years. There are two other Millenia trim levels for 2000 - the well-equipped Millenia and the potent Millenia S with Mazda's unique Miller-cycle engine. A smooth and efficient 170-horsepower, 2.5-liter, DOHC V6 powers the Millenia, while the Millenia S and Millennium Edition sport a 210-horsepower, 2.3-liter, Miller-cycle, DOHC V6. This award-winning futuristic powerplant uses delayed intake valve timing and a Lysholm compressor to deliver the power of a larger engine with the fuel economy of a smaller one.

Every Millenia model comes standard with a four-speed automatic transmission, leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, automatic climate control system, 16-inch alloy wheels, AM/FM/CD/cassette audio system, remote keyless entry system with two fobs, fog lamps, eight-way power driver's seat and dual de-powered air bags. The Millenia S adds leather seating surfaces, electronic traction control, 17-inch alloy wheels, power moonroof, eight-way power passenger's seat and a BOSE® audio system. The styling of the Millenia is sleek, fresh and timeless. It looks sporty and sophisticated. The interior is equally stylish, with the thoughtful touches expected in a luxury car. All Millenia models come with a smooth-riding four-wheel multi-link independent suspension, responsive variable-assist power rack-and-pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes with ABS. The result is a vehicle with athletic agility and a luxurious ride. In addition to its standard dual de-powered air bags, the Millenia features front and rear crumple zones, side impact door beams and special reinforcing boxes beneath the rear seat cushion to help protect the occupants in a side impact. During the first half of 1999, Millenia sales experienced a year-over-year increase of 21.7 percent. To help continue this positive trend, Mazda is reducing the base Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of the Millenia by $1,750, to $24,995, and the price of the Millenia S by $1,250, to $29,995. The price of the Millennium Edition is $30,995.

The 2000 Mazda Millenia, like all Mazda models, comes with a three-year roadside assistance program. With a call to a toll-free number, Millenia owners can access roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the United States and Canada. The Millenia is covered by a three-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty that covers every part on the vehicle except those subject to normal wear. The Millenia also features a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty. 2000 MAZDA 626 EVEN MORE SPIRITED, FEATURES DOZENS OF IMPROVEMENTS AND REVISED STYLING

IRVINE, Calif. - Change is good. Especially when the changes are like the ones Mazda has made to its best-selling 626 midsize sedan for the 2000 model year. The 2000 Mazda 626 features sharpened front and rear styling that gives it a more sporty, yet elegant look, from the five-point grille with prominent Mazda brand symbol to the jewel-like taillights. Inside, the new 626 boasts several amenities found in more expensive luxury cars. But the most significant change is the way it drives - sharper, more responsive with improved road feel. There are more than 70 changes in all to the 2000 Mazda 626. The 2000 Mazda 626 reinforces the company's brand personality through its stylish, spirited and insightful design and character. Dynamic improvements also reflect Mazda's heritage of offering driver-oriented handling and road feel. There are four 626 trim levels - the well-equipped LX and LX-V6, the leather-trimmed ES and top-of-the-line ES-V6. The LX and ES models are powered by a 2.0-liter DOHC inline four-cylinder engine, which now produces 130 horsepower (125 hp in NLEV states), and qualifies as an Ultra-Low Emissions Vehicle. LX-V6 and ES-V6 models receive a smooth 2.5-liter DOHC V6 delivering 170 horsepower (165 hp in NLEV states).

Exterior changes include a distinctive five-point grille with a large brand symbol, multi-surface reflector headlights, a redesigned front bumper with a revised lower air intake, available fog lights, larger body-side moldings, body-color upper door trim, larger rear badges, jewel-like taillights, each with a pair of round reflectors reminiscent of early Mazda coupes and sedans, and a larger chrome garnish around the license plate. The LX and LX-V6 now come equipped with 15-inch wheels, while the ES rides on 15-inch alloy wheels (optional on LX). The ES-V6 sports all-new 16-inch alloy wheels (optional on LX-V6). Changes beneath the surface are quite substantial - and significant. The steering, braking and overall road feel of the 626 are sportier and more responsive. The power rack-and-pinion steering is more precise, more like the popular Miata roadster. This is the result of a smoother-operating steering gear with better on-center feel, larger wheels and tires (15-inch on LX, LX-V6 and ES, 16-inch on ES-V6), a new solid front stabilizer bar and larger rear stabilizer bar and, most importantly, a more rigid body structure. Braking performance is enhanced with a firmer, more direct feel through the pedal. This is made possible by the adoption of improved front brake pads, a revised brake proportioning valve and a larger vacuum assist unit and master cylinder. Braking performance is improved through a 20 percent reduction in pedal effort. Critical to the new 626's more European road manners is its stiffer body structure. The front suspension towers have been strengthened, and diagonal braces have been added connecting the rear suspension towers to the floorpan above the rear axle. The torsional rigidity of the 2000-model 626 is 24.4 percent stiffer.

While the suspension is firmer and the body is more rigid, ride comfort has been enhanced as well. This seeming contradiction is made possible by Mazda's careful engineering to reduce the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) that are transmitted into the cabin. On the LX and ES, the crankshaft is now made of steel, rather than cast iron. The lower portion of the engine block is stiffer and the No. 3 engine mount is improved, reducing the transmission of unwanted vibrations into the passenger compartment. Intake noise is reduced, and the new 626 features additional insulation in key areas and urethane foam inserts in the roof pillars. The suspension system retains the proven MacPherson strut up front and Mazda's patented Twin-Trapezoidal Link (TTL) at the rear. The TTL suspension is a hallmark of Mazda's engineering expertise, providing a smooth ride, yet delivering responsive handling by keeping the rear tires in proper contact with the road surface even over large bumps. Safety is a priority at Mazda, as evidenced by the 626's dual de-powered air bags, available front side air bags, side door beams, optional ABS brakes and available traction control system (LX-V6 and ES-V6 models). The side air bags, the first ever offered on the 626, are contained in the outboard side of the upper seat back and incorporate both head and chest protection. The 626 seats five full-size adults comfortably. With 97.1 cubic feet of interior volume, the 626 offers as much room as a Toyota Camry and more than a Nissan Altima. The trunk, at 14.2 cubic feet, is larger than that of the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry or Nissan Altima.

The interior abounds with changes and refinements. Chrome accents add an upscale touch to the door handles, door courtesy lamps, the handbrake lever and automatic transmission shift lever. The steering wheel, shift lever and handbrake lever are now color-coordinated to the interior for a richer look. Keyless entry is standard on all models, as are overhead maplights with an integrated sunglasses holder. There is a new center console with a pair of covered cup holders, dual storage trays and a second power outlet inside the console box. The top of the center console is covered in either fabric or leather to match the interior. A rear seat center armrest is standard on all models and features two new cup holders and a covered storage area. The glovebox, ignition and driver's power window switches are now illuminated. To accommodate drivers of differing statures, there is a driver's seat lifter standard on all models. The 60/40-split fold-down rear seat accommodates long or bulky cargo at the touch of a button. Given the increasing importance of audio systems to today's consumers, the new 626 boasts one of the best. An AM/FM/CD audio system with four speakers is standard on the LX, ES and LX-V6 models, while a BOSE® AM/FM/CD/cassette unit with four full-range speakers is standard on the ES-V6 (optional on LX-V6). The ES-V6 is available with an in-dash six-disc CD changer. Yet despite all of the changes, the new 626 still has Mazda's exclusive, oscillating "swing vents," a longtime favorite feature of 626 owners.

With the more than 70 changes adding to its already exceptional value, the 2000 Mazda 626 is well-equipped to challenge the leaders in the midsize sedan segment. Like every 2000 Mazda model, the 626 comes with a three-year roadside assistance program. With a call to a toll-free number, 626 owners can access roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the United States and Canada. The 2000 Mazda 626 is covered by a comprehensive three-year/50,000-mile warranty that covers every part on the vehicle except those subject to normal wear. In addition, the 626 is covered by a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty. Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) is responsible for the sales and marketing, customer parts and service support of Mazda vehicles in the United States. 2000 MAZDA PROTEGÉ ADDS SAFETY FEATURES, UPSCALE TOUCHES -- Award- Winning Protegé Remains Roomiest in its Class --

IRVINE, Calif. - Mazda has taken the 2000 Protegé model - already hailed by a leading consumer magazine as the top-rated car in its class - and added new safety features, including available front seat side air bags and an ABS system with electronic brake force distribution (EBFD). The EBFD system automatically adjusts the braking force of the rear brakes depending on vehicle load, ensuring shorter stopping distances when fully loaded. The previous Mazda Protegé won numerous awards for its spacious interior, developed through a design process known as OptiSpace. Several interior appointments have been added to the Protegé's class-leading interior space (92.6 cu. ft. of interior room and 12.9 cu. ft. of trunk space). For 2000, Mazda has added chrome accents to the inner door handles, parking brake button and A/T shift lever button, while a new color-matched shift lever and parking brake lever, and illuminated power window switches (LX and ES models) result in a richer, more upscale look. The Mazda Protegé features creased, European-inspired styling - giving it a custom-tailored look that is unexpected in the normally "off-the-rack" compact sedan class. The Protegé looks as though it belongs in a more expensive class - from its jewel-like free-surface headlight reflectors and chrome-accented grille all the way to the body-colored bumpers.

Beneath the Protegé's stylish skin is Mazda's hallmark "Triple-H" construction. The first "H" consists of the B-pillar, roof rail and side sill on each side of the car. The second "H" is comprised of the roof rails and roof crossmember and the third "H" consists of the side sills and No. 3 crossmember. These reinforced frames create an extremely strong passenger compartment structure that ensures optimal protection for the occupants of the Protegé in the event of a side impact or rollover. The Protegé's safety story goes well beyond its "Triple-H" construction, however. The new Protegé also features side-impact door beams and catch pins on the rear doors that prevent them from intruding into the cabin in a side impact. There are front and rear crumple zones that absorb front and rear impacts before they reach the cabin. Combined, these safety features provide enhanced protection from all directions. Dual de-powered air bags are standard, as are three-point seatbelts for all five seating positions. Additionally, the front seats feature load limiter seat belts. Front seat side air bags and a three-channel ABS system with EBFD is available on LX and ES models. Three trim levels are available on the 2000 Mazda Protegé - DX, LX and ES. Both the DX and LX models come equipped with a 1.6-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine, while the sportier ES model comes with a 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine.

Every Protegé comes with a long list of standard features, including power rack-and-pinion steering, power front ventilated disc and rear drum brakes, front and rear stabilizer bars, rear seat heater ducts, body-color bumpers, intermittent wipers, 60/40 split fold-down seatbacks, tilt steering wheel, low fuel warning lamp and adjustable front seat shoulder belt anchors. The LX model adds cruise control with steering wheel-mounted switches, AM/FM/CD audio system, power door locks, body-color door handles and side moldings, power mirrors, adjustable driver's seat height and tilt, power windows and integrated rear seat headrests. The ES model features all of the above, plus air conditioning, 15-inch alloy wheels and keyless remote with illuminated entry. Several options are offered for each Protegé trim level. On the DX model, a Convenience Package includes air conditioning, AM/FM/CD audio system and floor mats. On the LX model, a Comfort Package adds air conditioning and floor mats, while the LX Premium Package adds front seat side air bags, power glass moonroof, ABS with EBFD and keyless remote with illuminated entry. The ES Premium Package adds front seat side air bags, power glass moonroof, ABS with EBFD and floor mats to the top-of-the-line ES model. The 2000 Mazda Protegé offers a choice of two engines - an energetic 1.6-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine which produces 105 horsepower (103 in LEV states) and a 1.8-liter DOHC four-cylinder engine producing 122 horsepower (120 in LEV states). The 1.6-liter engine powering the DX and LX models achieves Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (ULEV) status in California, making it the first vehicle in its class to achieve this distinction.

Both engines may be mated to either a smooth-shifting five-speed manual transmission or an electronically-controlled four-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is 29 city/34 hwy for the five-speed-equipped 1.6-liter and 26 city/30 hwy for the five-speed-equipped 1.8-liter. For sure-footed, spirited handling, the 2000 Mazda Protegé uses a proven MacPherson independent front suspension and Mazda's patented Twin-Trapezoidal Link rear suspension. To improve feel and provide more linear steering response, the front roll center is lower than the rear roll center. Rack-and-pinion steering with variable power assist provides a balance between low-speed maneuvering and exceptional feel and response at highway speeds. Brakes are power-assisted ventilated front discs and rear drums. A four-sensor, three-channel anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution (EBFD) is available on the LX and ES models as part of an option package. Inside, the driver is greeted by a smoothly styled instrument panel. The gauges are grouped beneath a deep hood for improved visibility. A tachometer is standard on LX and ES models. The center stack houses the AM/FM/CD audio system and ventilation controls within easy reach. Lightly dimpled surfaces provide a sporty visual accent on the instrument panel, door handles and side sills.

The driver's seat on LX and ES models features a mechanism that raises the height of the seat and adjusts the angle of the bottom cushion, making it easier for drivers of all sizes to make themselves comfortable behind the wheel. The rear seat on all Protegé models is split 60/40, with both sides able to fold down to accommodate long or oversized cargo. There are numerous storage compartments within the interior, including a covered storage compartment below the audio system that holds six CDs. Like every 2000 Mazda model, the Protegé comes with a three-year roadside assistance program. With a call to a toll-free number, Protegé owners can access roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the United States and Canada. The 2000 Mazda Protegé is covered by a comprehensive three-year/50,000-mile warranty that covers every part on the vehicle except those subject to normal wear. In addition, the Protegé is covered by a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty. 2000 MAZDA MIATA ADDS STANDARD EQUIPMENT -- World's Best-Selling Roadster Features Simplified Lineup --

IRVINE, Calif. - How do you improve an automotive icon? If you are Mazda North American Operations (MNAO) and the icon in question is the 2000 Miata roadster, the next evolutionary step is to simplify the lineup and add a distinctive new color - Evolution Orange Mica. The Mazda Miata was totally reworked in 1999, with more muscular and aggressive styling, more power, a stiffer structure and a thoroughly revised interior. For the 2000 model year, two Miata trim levels are available: the cloth-trimmed Miata and the leather-trimmed Miata LS. Every 2000 Mazda Miata now comes equipped with alloy wheels (14-inch on Miata and 15-inch on Miata LS), power steering, leather-wrapped NARDI® steering wheel, power windows, power mirrors and power antenna. There are three option packages available on the 2000 Miata - a Miata Convenience Package, a Miata Suspension Package and a Miata LS Suspension Package. The Miata Convenience Package includes tweeter speakers mounted in the upper door trim, power door locks, cruise control and Mazda's innovative Windblocker panel behind the seats. The Miata Suspension Package includes Torsen® limited-slip differential (LSD), strut tower brace, 15-inch wheels and tires and sport suspension with Bilstein® shock absorbers. The Miata LS Suspension Package includes the strut tower brace and sport suspension (the Torsen® LSD and 15-inch wheels are standard on the Miata LS).

In addition, there are several free-standing options available on the Miata, including air conditioning, detachable hardtop, automatic transmission, fog lights, Windblocker and ABS brakes (Miata LS only). The 2000 Mazda Miata remains true to its original concept - a lightweight, affordable, two-seat roadster that delivers the pure enjoyment of wind-in-the-hair driving. With more than 500,000 units sold worldwide since its introduction, the Miata is now the best-selling two-seat roadster in automotive history. The Miata has one of the most instantly recognizable shapes on the road today. This timeless styling ensures that the Miata will look as good in ten years as it does today. The taut, muscular and aggressive look of the Miata says that it is a pure sports car. The Miata is powered by a 140-horsepower (138-hp in Calif.) DOHC 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, mated to a short-throw five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. Mazda's innovative Power Plant Frame (PPF) ties the powertrain to the differential unit, creating a solid backbone for the car and providing a feeling of instantaneous response. Mazda calls this feeling "a oneness between horse and rider." The Mazda Miata features a race-proven four-wheel double-wishbone suspension design with a lower front roll center, which results in quicker response when cornering and a more secure feel. Unlike many of its competitors, the Miata is a purpose-built driver's car.

Miata LS models feature 15-inch alloy wheels with 195/50 R15 Michelin tires, which are also included in the Suspension Package on the Miata. The Miata comes with 14-inch alloy wheels and 185/60 R14 tires. The Miata features four-wheel disc brakes, with ventilated discs in front. A three-channel ABS system is available on Miata LS models. The 2000 Mazda Miata is equipped with dual de-powered air bags. There is a key-operated de-activation switch for the passenger-side air bag on the center console, making the Miata the first car in its class to offer this feature. An AM/FM/CD stereo system with two door-mounted speakers is standard, while a cassette deck is available as an option. Miata LS models include a standard high-performance BOSE® sound system with an AM/FM/CD/cassette head unit; two compact 100-watt amplifiers; two 8-inch low-mass, low-profile door speakers; and two 2-inch wide-range speakers mounted high on the door. The result is impressive sound quality in an open car. The Miata's manually operated convertible top features a glass rear window with a defroster, a feature not found on several convertibles costing substantially more. The top is considered by automotive experts to be the easiest to raise and lower.

The Mazda Miata has won numerous awards and accolades in its first decade on the market. Most recently, the Miata was named to Car and Driver's "10Best" list and was one of Automobile's "All-Stars." The Miata is generally credited with having single-handedly revived the two-seat roadster market, prompting manufacturers in Europe, America and Japan to develop roadsters of their own. The Miata has also given rise to the largest single marquee car club in the world, the 25,000 member Miata Club of America. Like every 2000 Mazda model, the Miata comes with a three-year roadside assistance program. With a call to a toll-free number, Miata owners can access roadside assistance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year throughout the United States and Canada. The 2000 Mazda Miata is covered by a comprehensive three-year/50,000-mile warranty that covers every part on the vehicle except those subject to normal wear. In addition, the Miata is covered by a five-year/unlimited-mileage corrosion warranty.
