Jerry Coons, Jr. of Tucson, Ariz., who narrowly missed a spinning Dave Darland during Sunday's "Glen Niebel Classic" presented by the Stoops Automotive Group at the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway, won the 50-lap WorldCom National Midget Car race in his Van Buerden Insurance Gaerte/Drinan.

Coons took the lead from Brian Gerster on lap 22 and led the rest of the way for the victory. He was followed at the checkered flag by Dave Steele, Tony Ave, Jay Drake and Ryan Scott. Drake's finish left him with a one-point lead over Ave in the new series standings going into the May 11 race at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky.

Gerster led the first 21 laps of the race before his car was forced out by mechanical problems.

Steele was Sunday's fastest qualifier. Donnie Lehmann won an eight-lap qualifiers race and heats went to Darland, Jimmy McCune, A.J. Felker and Aaron Fike. Coons won the 12-lap semi.
