Whyte Joins General Cable as President and Chief Executive Officer of General Cable Oceania

    HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky.--April 9, 2001--General Cable has announced the appointment of Campbell Whyte as President and Chief Executive Officer of General Cable Oceania. Whyte will report directly to Gregory Kenny, President and Chief Operating Officer of General Cable Corporation and will be based out of Christchurch, New Zealand. General Cable Oceania provides telecommunications, energy and electrical cables to the construction, power utilities, communications, and oil, gas, and petrochemical industries in Australia, New Zealand and Asia Pacific.
    "Campbell brings to General Cable a strong record of accomplishment in the markets served by our Oceania business and he is ideally suited for this position," said Kenny. "Campbell has been charged with profitably building upon our already strong market position and identifying strategic growth opportunities with key regional and worldwide customers."
    Whyte started his career with Shell Oil in New Zealand in 1988 and held a number of management positions in sales and marketing. In 1993, Whyte joined Orica New Zealand, a leading manufacturer of chemicals, paints and commercial explosives, as Industrial Business Manager and held key positions in marketing, exports, and distribution. Most recently, Whyte was New Zealand Country Manager for Orica's explosives business, and was responsible for the growth and profitability of the business throughout the New Zealand, Australia and Asia Pacific regions. Whyte has a bachelor's degree in Engineering from Canterbury University in New Zealand.

    General Cable also announced the promotion of Kevin Lawler to Senior Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer of General Cable Oceania, reporting to Campbell Whyte. Lawler has been with the Company since 1978 and has been responsible for leading the Finance and Information Technology functions during his tenure. Most recently, Lawler was acting CEO of General Cable Oceania. The new role of Chief Administrative Officer recognizes Lawler's responsibility in the areas of supply chain management, materials, and business development in addition to finance and information technology. Lawler has a bachelor's degree in Commerce and Accounting from Canterbury University.
