Fujitsu Introduces Two New Microcontrollers in Its F2MC Series
SAN JOSE, Calif.--April 9, 2001--Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. today introduced two new products in its F2MC(R) (Fujitsu Flexible Microcontroller) Series for vehicle display control applications. Jointly developed by Fujitsu Limited and Fujitsu Devices, Inc., the MB90F428GA and MB90428GA are 16-bit microcontrollers featuring the Control Area Network (CAN) controller, the most popular standard for automobile-based LANs. These devices are designed to serve the LANs that are now being incorporated into vehicles for electronic information, safety, comfort and entertainment controls.
The new microcontrollers provide a single-chip solution with up to four stepper-motor control blocks, used for needle-type meters like the speedometer tachometer and fuel gauge. The on-chip LCD-panel controller manages character and numerical information. The MCUs also include other functions like the timer, A/D converter, sound generators and UART. Packaging all control functions into one device makes the system more compact, more reliable and less expensive.
With enhancements to the failsafe function of the low-voltage detector circuit and the CPU-activity detector circuit, the MCUs can detect interruptions in the power-supply voltage, as well as CPU malfunctions. This failsafe function, which is available immediately after a power-on reset, generates a reset signal, thus eliminating the need for an external reset IC.
The MB90F428GA is equipped with 128K bytes of internal flash memory. This makes it easy for users to modify programs and to create software that self-programs.
"The new F2MC microcontrollers integrate the CAN controller, LCD controller, stepper-motor controller and other functions needed in automotive systems," said Sardar Haddad, marketing director of FMI's Embedded Processor Group. "The highly integrated MCUs enable system engineers to simplify designs, reduce costs and accelerate time-to-market."
Pricing and Availability
The new MCUs are available now in 100-pin Quad flat pack and LQFP packages. The MB90F428GA, with flash memory, is available now in 50,000-piece volumes for $10.60 each. The MB90428GA, with Mask ROM, is priced at $7.50 in 50,000-piece quantities.
