DaimlerChrysler Selects UGS' e-Vis Solution to
Streamline Assembly of The 2002 Jeep(R) Liberty at its New
Toledo North Assembly Plant
UGS Technology is Expected to Improve OEM-Supplier Communication,
Reduce Time-To-Market and Prevent Costly Assembly Line Delays
CYPRESS, Calif., April 3 DaimlerChrysler Corporation has
selected the e-Vis collaboration solution from UGS to automate the
real-time sharing of manufacturing related quality data across the Jeep(R)
platform team and supply chain. The automaker will use e-Vis, a secure,
Internet-enabled visual collaboration solution, to help Jeep engineers, shop-
floor personnel and suppliers to collaborate more efficiently. This improved
communication of product and process data will allow Jeep Liberty suppliers to
deliver accurate suspension systems directly to the assembly line, reduce
adjustments on the line and help bring higher quality vehicles to market
faster and at lower costs.
"UGS' e-Vis solution will facilitate critical technologies for the all-new
Jeep Liberty by providing us a method for real-time, visual communication of
product and production variable data," says Brian Burtka, supervisor of
steering and suspension in DaimlerChrysler's Jeep Platform. "Our goal with
the Jeep Liberty is to identify a component or process failure within five
minutes to prevent line stoppage. We expect e-Vis to deliver the key
information to the appropriate people in a drill-down, menu selection style
format within minutes. Our plant and suppliers can continually monitor the
statistical data and optimize trends based on real-time production variation
data to optimize component processes that will eliminate downtime within the
Toledo North Assembly Plant, where the new Jeep is being built. This will
result in significant time and cost-savings on the assembly line."
DaimlerChrysler's UGS-powered automated environment for communication of
dimensional quality data will work in conjunction with a machine equipped with
laser cameras to measure thousands of points on the vehicle body where the
suspension system is attached. The solution includes software that will
statistically analyze this data to spot trends. Then, e-Vis will
automatically send the data via automatic email or pager to Jeep engineers,
shop-floor personnel and the suspension supplier, who will review the data
together in real time and determine what adjustments are required. The
supplier can make the necessary changes in-house and deliver accurate
suspension systems directly to the plant.
"With e-Vis's collaboration and solutions, DaimlerChrysler's Jeep(R)
Platform will be able to better predict product and process variations in
launching the all-new Jeep Liberty," says Tony Affuso, president and CEO of
UGS. "These solutions provide world-class automakers like DaimlerChrysler a
secure, scalable framework for improving the communication of product and
process data among partners and suppliers whose specific knowledge adds value
to the product life cycle."
The all-new 2002 Jeep Liberty starts production this spring at the state-
of-the-art Toledo North Assembly Plant. The Liberty will be available in
dealerships this summer.
