FAIRFIELD, N.J.—The defending Grand-Am SportsRacer II champion, Archangel Motorsport Services, has announced it will offer a test drive to a U.S. F2000 National Championship driver in 2001.
As part of the U.S. F2000 career options package, Archangel will offer a free test to the U.S. F2000 driver which completes the most laps during the 2001 season. The test will be conducted in one of Archangel’s Nissan-powered Lola’s at a track to be determined, following the completion of both the U.S. F2000 National Championship and Rolex Grand-Am Series seasons.
“We’ve had great success with F2000 graduates in the car,” said Michael Johnson, Archangel Motorsport Services owner and a former U.S. F2000 driver. “In order to succeed in endurance racing you need to be both quick and consistent. That’s why we’re offering the test to the driver who completes the most laps.”
In 2000, Archangel dominated the newly formed SportsRacer II class in Grand-Am. In the team’s inaugural season it won six of the nine races, capturing the championship and giving U.S. F2000 graduates Ryan Hampton and Larry Oberto the driver championship. As a reward for winning the title the 2000 SportsRacer champion, Dyson Racing, offered both Hampton and Oberto a test. In early November, Hampton and Oberto drove the Dyson Racing Riley & Scott MKIII at Virginia International Raceway in a successful test.
“One reason we want to do this is because Dyson gave the opportunity to our drivers last year,” said Johnson. “As a former U.S. F2000 team we have always believed in the quality of the series and we want to help drivers move up the motorsports ladder.”
Archangel Motorsport Services renews its quest to repeat as SportsRacer II champion April 21, at Phoenix International Raceway.
