Volkswagen Makes Companywide Decision to Go Full Throttle with Vignette Applications; Europe's Largest Carmaker Chooses Vignette as Standard for Customer-Driven Web Sites
AUSTIN, Texas--March 26, 2001--Vignette Corp. , the leading supplier of customer-driven Internet applications, today announced that Volkswagen AG, Europe's No. 1 auto manufacturer, has made a corporate wide commitment to deploy Vignette(R) V/Series applications on its new and existing Web sites. The agreement encompasses Volkswagen AG's headquarters in Germany, as well as more than 350 subsidiaries of Volkswagen worldwide.Vignette applications will be implemented in all four major divisions of Volkswagen AG: Volkswagen's worldwide headquarters in Wolfsburg; Autostadt, an on-site automotive theme park where VW customers pick up new cars; the worldwide headquarters of AUDI AG; and Volkswagen Financial Services AG, the consumer financing and leasing arm for all Volkswagen-owned brands, including AUDI, Bentley, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce, SEAT SA and SKODA.
Volkswagen's deployment of Vignette Internet applications began at the popular Autostadt ("Auto City"), which went live with an intranet and extranet in April 2000. The car distribution center will use Vignette applications as a convenient notification tool for customers. Whenever a dealer sells a vehicle, they will give the buyer a customer card, much like an encoded credit card. Buyers then use their customer code online to find out when their car will be ready and arrange a pick-up date.
"Vignette's applications were clearly the best fit for meeting our e-business objectives," said Rolf Kloss, Leiter Neue Medien Marke Volkswagen. "Based on the recommendation of our subsidiary Gedas, which functions as VW's IT company, we chose Vignette's applications because they have the flexibility to accommodate our intranet, extranet and external Web site needs."
Following the successful Autostadt deployment, Volkswagen consolidated its Web activities and decided to standardize on Vignette applications. As a result, all new Web sites, including those of the 42 VW centers in Germany, will be based on Vignette technology. Existing Web sites, such as http://www.volkswagen.de/, will move to Vignette applications over time.
In parallel with those activities, Volkswagen is also working with its AUDI division on an extension to AUDI's IBM WebSphere-based commerce framework with Vignette applications. Volkswagen's company wide efforts also include building a Vignette-based solution for Volkswagen Financial Services, which will serve affiliates within its PartnerNet organization and deliver content to all other key sites at Volkswagen AG.
Volkswagen boasts an annual production of more than 5 million cars, vans and trucks, including its popular Jetta and Passat models. The Global 500 company, which reports annual sales of more than $75 billion, also owns luxury automakers Audi, Lamborghini, Rolls-Royce and Bentley, as well as SKODA, a Czech Republic carmaker, and SEAT, an auto manufacturer based in Barcelona, Spain.
"VW's corporate commitment to Vignette is a strategic investment in building long-term, online customer relationships," said Kasper Rorsted, EMEA general manager and senior vice president at Vignette. "Through our corporate wide agreement with Volkswagen AG, any of its 350-plus subsidiary locations-- from Delaware to Singapore to Sao Paulo -- can now step in and license Vignette customer-driven Internet applications."
